Hi, any general tips about moving out from a dorm to an apartment?
How did you get your furniture? Gas company? Water? Internet? etc.

Thank you :]

Furniture: Mostly from my dad’s place. I got a bed that I slept on, some lamps, tables etc. My stepmom also gave me a couple of couches. This was feasible since my uni is about 40 minutes from my dad’s. If you live far from home then IKEA and Craigslist are probably your best bets.

Gas/water/electric: Uhm you shouldn’t have to worry about that when you rent an apartment. Or a house for that matter. Some landlords charge a flat rate for utilities and some make you pay the exact amount.

Internet and cable: Much like above this is usually already set up.

ThisMortalSoil, some also don’t do anything and leave you on your own. Thats what mine did. I had to open an account with the gas, electric, and cable companies. The only thing that was included in rent was water. My roommates and I just ended up splitting the bills.

Agree with broken, it depends entirely on the apartment. We had to open an electric and cable account, but landlord took care of water and garbage.

We really can’t answer those types of questions for you. You NEED to ask your landlord. If you do need to do those things, make sure you get it set up before you move in. Contact the local utilities company and they’ll walk you through the process.

My apartment came furnished. What we didn’t have we bought at Ikea.
