Moving to Florida over the summer, new to prep schools

Hi, I'm moving to Miami over the summer from a top 100 public school in the DC area. I've never been to a private school, except pre-k (Which I don't count), and was wondering about the whole admissions process. I did a little bit of research, and most of the schools had an application deadline, which is long since passed, but my family and I only found out about the move recently, so we are looking for a good private school for the 2013-14 year (im going into 10th grade). What should I do? I don't want to go into public school, because from what I've heard, they aren't so great and are very crowded, but at the same time I may not have an option. So I guess what I am asking is; What is the common admissions process, and is there a way to apply late? Also, what are some good ones in the area, looking at Pinecrest and Gulliver right now. Thanks, and sorry for the lengthy question.

are you looking to board? day? what geographica location are you looking at? The schools your looking for have rolling admissions. I think theres a thread about rolling admission… look at that.

Yeah, you don’t want to go topublic school in Miami. They’re overcrowded, filled with people who aren’t motivated and many of them have high crime and drug rates.
If you’re living in the Ft. Lauderdale and Palm Beach area, look at Pinecrest, Gulliver, and American Heritage. If you’re living down south, look at Miami Country Day School. Idk about the deadlines though, so you’ll have to figure that out for yourself.

I’ve heard nice things about The Bolles School in Jacksonville, FL.

PhotographerMom, it’s like a 3-4 hour drive from Miami to Jacksonville. I doubt he would travel that far every day.

Gulliver is the best if you can afford 20k per year.

I apologize, Hopefull2013. I offered it as a Florida Boarding School option.

I think PhotographerMom is right. Attending as a boarding student will give you a great experience. Also, you would be pretty close to your family, so it wouldn’t be too bad.

Ransom Everglades School

@Dennis: no im looking for a day school near Miami, even pinecrest is a little far. BTW, could you link me to the rolling admissions page, i would be very interested, Thanks.

@Hopefull2013 Thanks, those were some of the schools I was looking at, did not know about american heritage though, will look into that.

@kiesha: I dont really think boarding is right for me, I know I will have to do it in college, but it would be such a radical change over 1 summer.

@Newyorkbeantown: Do you know if they would admit late? I heard that it is hard enough to get in on time, not so sure about late.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

@northeastlax: search prep schools with rolling admissions

I couldn’t find any in florida. search for day schools in florida, see if any are close and i would look to see if they have rolling admission. It’s usually on the Timeline for Applying pages. If you are not sure, you might want to email them. Sorry, I have a lot of hurry. I’ll try and find more info tommorow
