Moving to MI, No chance of UofM?

Originally from MI and we now have an opportunity to move back. D is a senior in HS this year and she now has it in her mind that she will go to UofM. I really think her chances of getting in are slim to none but I thought I would ask.

Homeschooled. Dual Enrolled. Graduating with AA. Should have a 4.0 (does now). 28 on ACT. Retaking in Sept. President of psychology club at the community college. 500+ volunteer hours. Strong writing skills. Has other EC that she can mention. Major in psychology, minor in art.

I just don't see it and think she is most certainly reaching. Nothing wrong with a reach but I don't think she understands the sheer number of applicants at UofM and the competition. We currently live in FL where she can get into any of our state colleges so her view is a bit slighted.

4.0 GPA is always good. Is she taking challenging classes, like IBs or APs? She could use a slight boost to her ACT, like a 30. If she is considered in-state, she has a solid chance (match). Otherwise, probably a realistic reach.

She’s getting an AA? So she has a large number (nearly 60, even more?) of CC credits? And she has a 4.0 in her CC classes?

I think her chances are very good. Retaking and doing better on the ACT won’t hurt, but I don’t think it’s necessary. I think by the time she gets her associates she’ll be a transfer student rather than a freshman admission and for transfers GPA is really what matters. You can’t beat a 4.0.

The problem is, she will be considered an OOS student. I’m not sure I want to pay OOS for UofM even if she can get in but I also assume being OOS reduces her chances of getting in anyway. I wish there was a way of establishing residency but there isn’t. My husband could go up now but D needs to finish her degree at the community college down here. Plus, school just started up north so even if it worked, we would be just shy of the 12 month residency requirement. If the rest of us leave FL after D is settled into a state college here, I think she will also lose her residency in FL after one year. We’re screwed. I hope some of those private colleges come back with good money.

She has statistics this semester and if there is any class that has a chance of ruining her 4.0, it will be this class! I see a B in her future. She is hoping to bump the ACT up. Practice tests are much higher but nerves take over during testing.

Michigan doesn’t start 'till after labor day. And if it’s a matter of a couple of months or even a full year of residency, she can just start later, right? She’ll have a lot of credits going in anyway.

Instate or Out-of-State, a 4.0 (or a 3.95 or whatever she’ll have if she gets a B in stats) in college courses is very good and I would be quite surprised if she got rejected.

I have links to some ACT practice tests (accurately formatted questions) posted. I’ll provide the link. My nerves were crazy taking the ACT the first time, but I found after taking quite a few practice tests I could be comfortable and remove the stress like I was just taking it in my bedroom. Practice, practice, practice.
