We will be moving to Raleigh from Chicago when my son graduates high school next year. My son wants to major in engineering. He currently has a 3.0 GPA and a 27 ACT.
What colleges are good for engineering in North Carolina? With his GPA what are his chances for admission?
Any help is much appreciated!
North Carolina State University, right in Raleigh.
NC State would be most ideal but his GPA seems low. Try to bring it up, and also retake the ACT if you can and aim for around 30 give or take to be really competitive academically. Other great schools are Duke(unlikely), UNC(bio eng.), Wake Forest, etc.
His GPA is too low for Duke, UNC, etc. It’s borderline for NCSU too. Can he bring it up at all? He could go to Wake Tech Community College for a year and bring up his GPA then try to transfer into NCSU if he doesn’t get in. Also could sit out a year so you can get the in state tuition rate. NCSU has the most to offer as far as engineering.
Thanks so much for the information and great advice! I was doing some research and saw that UNC-Asheville offers an engineering program they call 2-Plus-2, where the student does 2 years there and then transfers to NC State to complete the degree. Does anyone know anything about this? Also, is UNC-Asheville any easier to get into?
Our family visited Asheville a couple of years ago and went to that campus…VERY nice.
