Hey everyone, I'm going to attend SUNY in the fall as a graduate mathematics student and was wondering what the best way to move all my stuff there would be? I live in California, LA so I'm probably going to be shipping a lot of it. The only things I really need to worry about however are my computer (desktop) and possibly my tv depending on the apartment they give me. Everything else can be carried on person when I fly over or re-purchased there.

Anyone in the same situation/have any suggestions to minimize cost?

Sorry, I can’t help- I am going to SB in the fall but I live 15 minutes away from the campus!!! I do wish you luck, though! There has to be some info on how to manage this situation, though, check out Google!!! See ya on campus!

You’ll have to look into a shipping company and then get a rental unit during winters and summers you’re not on campus.

I moved from san diego to NY (for different reasons though). You will want to ship most things, having a packing service take your things cross country is VERY expensive, in the vacinity of 2k plus- you can ship good sized boxes via USPS parcel post for about 15-20 dollars each… i shipped most of my clothes and everything else, and then packed things in two large suitcases.

Depending on the price of your TV i would consider selling it versus shipping it… if you have the old square style, they are very heavy and the shipping cost outweighs the cost to replace the tv. If you have a flat screen tv, you will need to get a box for it and then pay shipping. The boxes from UHAUL which are specifically for flat screens are 90bucks. Then the shipping will be about 100 unless the tv is small, otherwise the dimensions will make it non standard.

(my advice applies to lite packing- if you are taking furniture along clearly a shipping service is the only option)
In terms of your desktop, if you have a flat panel monitor i would just pack in in a large suitcase with a bunch of your clothes and check it on the plane. You may have to pay extra for going over the 50 pound limit but usually it is about 20-30 dollars, and it is safer than shipping it over.
