Because of financial reasons, my family and I will be moving to Texas in the summer of 08, and therefore I will start my senior year at a Texas high school, probably in Houston. This means I will be going to University of Texas at Austin for college, hopefully in Engineering. If I recall correctly, Texas has a top 10% admission rule, so I had a few questions regarding that.

Is class rank usually weighted, as in AP/Honors courses are worth more than regular?

How competitive are the schools? Around what type of GPA would I need to be in the top 10%?

Depends on your school. All of the ones I've been to(5 high schools) has weighted GPA system, and AP/Honors courses are worth more.

Depends on what area you live in. GPA is often measured differently, and schools vary in the level of competence, so it's hard to give you a specific GPA you will need in order to be in the top 10%.

Welcome to Texas, greatest state in the nation. ;)

all hs in my area go by weighted gpa and AP/Honors gives you ten extra points (we go by 100 instead of 4.0)

My school isnt very competitive-bottom of the 10th % people have like low 90 weighted gpas, and 140 150 psats.

Also, i think they are changing it to top 7.5% instead of top 10%.
Im from South Texas, btw, and yeah, Texas is the best :P

Is class rank usually weighted, as in AP/Honors courses are worth more than regular?
-Yes you get 10pts extra added on your to your gpa at my school.

How competitive are the schools? Around what type of GPA would I need to be in the top 10%?

It depends on what area of Houston you are moving to. Some schools are competitive and some schools are not. Also I like in austin and im in the top 10% and my gpa is 3.6 which is basically the average for my school. its just different in every school.

The proposed bill to lower it to 7.5% or anything varying from the original 10% wasn't passed.

So as the others stated above - it really does depend on what school you go to and the area. More than likely they do award higher GPA points for those rigorous classes.

Yes, if I recall correctly the public schools in my area (I go to private school) rank by weighted GPA.

Ha, some of the public high schools in my area are so uncompetitive that with common sense you can be in the top 10%. I kid you not, many people where I live (Corpus Christi) just care about passing their classes...not many people are influenced to do well in school.

Then again, I live in South Texas, which is completely different from Houston, Dallas, Austin, etc. so things vary from one place to another. Yep, we're proud to be the biggest state in the U.S. (don't give me any of that Alaska ********) .

I happen to live in Houston and go to an extremely competitive high school in the Cy-Fair ISD. I'm also going to be a senior this year and can tell you that G.P.A is crucial of course, and that if you're not in the top ten percent you're pretty much screwed. ESPECIALLY as far as U.T. goes. U.T's my dream school, but b/c i'm 89 out of 677, i will not be attending. Yes, AP classes and "K"(honors) classes are worth more than L(level) classes. We also use a 6.0 scale, so the highest grade point you can get with AP/Honors is a 7 and 6 for L-level. Also, AP classes are taken extremely seriously over here, if you want to go to a school like U.T. you'll be needing to take quite a few. To be in the top ten percent at my school you'd be needing about a 6.3. G.P.A. Hope I helped some and pray you don't end up at Cy-Creek!

Gpa depends on the school district you go to. most of them are weighted, at least in the dallas area
houston area is pretty competitive, esp sugarland, lots of asians in houston >.<
top 10%, ur guaranteed into the school, but not necessarily the major you want
