MPulse summer

Just wondering if anyone knows whether in-person auditions tend to increase the odds of acceptance in the summer acting consortium over the DVD submission. We live in Kansas City, but could use FF miles and hotel points to go up to Ann Arbor if it would make a difference. My son is really interested in this program.

Thanks.

I went to the program in '08 and loved it! I auditioned via DVD and we were told that it doesn’t really make a difference. I think about half of us audition via DVD and half at the school. Let me know if you have any more questions- I had such a wonderful time there!

Thanks Monologue. Actually, if you have any insight as to what they are looking for with regard to monologues or presentation style, that would be great. Was it mostly upperclassmen or were there upcoming sophomores and freshmen, as well? I noticed on the website that there was a “combat” component. Did you get to experience this? What sort of backgrounds and experiences did the students generally have listed on their resumes?

Thanks again!

As far as I remember, monologues were all over the board from Lost in Yonkers to The Importance of Being Earnest, but keep in mind that those were the monologues we were asked to prepare for the actual program- I’m not sure of the monologues used for peoples auditions, but I can ask some of my friends!
The majority of us were rising juniors and seniors- there were 3 who were going into their freshman/ sophomore year.
The combat component was one of our favorites  It took place in our second week of the program and we learned the basics of stage combat, from stage slaps to really basic sword/knife fighting.
Most of the attendees experience was from either school productions or community theaters… however, I think one of my friends had been in a feature film.
I hope that helps!

Monologue, you are most helpful. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the combat component. So, I am wondering, is it safe to say that it would be best to select monologues from plays rather than movies? It’s also nice to hear that you have made new friends and stayed in touch with the other folks you met. I have been concerned that in such a competitive arena, things could get a little cut-throat.

Yes, I would definitely recommend that he do a monologue from a published play. Mpulse TDA is really tight-knit, some of the people I met there w=have become some of my closest friends because we keep in touch so much!
It’s competitive, but not cut-throat- it’s a really welcoming environment, and the professors are awesome and really friendly (and are the professors are the same as the ones for the BFA acting program at Michigan).
