Hi everyone,

I'm currently a Junior at UCSD and I've begun doing research for potential terminal MS/MA programs in Economics to apply to next year. UCSC's MS in Applied Economics and Finance program caught my eye, so I'm curious to know if anyone here has some statistics of the students admitted or information on the quality of the program.

Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

If you can get into the PhD program, I would do that. I was about to do the MA at temple U. . I took 1 macro analysis class to explore the field. I learned Everyone goes for the PhD. The masters is for those who can’t complete the PhD.

Do you have a strong calc background? I got giged on that as well. Apparently they want pure calculus not finance or applied calculus as a background. I wasn’t allowed to take macro theory because of that. So I went for an MBA/Finance instead. Aced the class though. I learned a lot and had fun (fun for a business geek).

I’ve considered doing the PhD program but I don’t want to spend the extra 2+ years a PhD program will require. I also don’t really have much research experience so I think that will hurt my chances of getting into most schools.

I’ve got a pretty good math background since I’m minoring in math so I should be prepared enough for most MA/MS programs.
