MSc from Oxford, then what?

I received an offer from Oxford to pursue its 1-year taught MSc course in Computer Science. While this is a great opportunity, I have some fears regarding what happens AFTER I graduate.

I want to know how good (or bad) is a Master's degree from Oxford, when taking into consideration that I will most likely want to apply for a PhD (in a Computer Science related field) in a TOP university in the US (note that I am an international student, not from the US nor from England).

Hopefully someone with that same experience will be able to answer me.

A master’s from Oxford is a pretty awesome darn thing to have on your resume. It will be a plus for applying to Ph.D. programs in the U.S.

You should ask this in the grad school forum, and you should talk it over with your faculty advisor. You need advice specific to your career field, and to your long-term professional goals.

happymom is right, though as it happens I was being field specific (not that I gave any hint to that fact in my post). I have a BA and MS in computer science and information science (Rhodes and Penn State) and a doctorate in higher ed (Memphis). My career has been in IT, mostly software engineering and business intelligence.

alguru, obviously I don’t know your personal circumstances but you should consider what financial implications the MSc will have.

If you are not receiving funding the costs (tuition fees, living costs etc) will be substantial particularly as you are an international student.

Thank you all for your replies!

Laylah, I understand what you’re saying, and I have already added these costs to my calculations. However, I was trying to assess the value of the Oxford MSc degree and find out how “effective” it will be in getting me a PhD position in a top US institution.

On another note, I received an offer from McGill (also master’s in computer science). I will most likely be given some funding. But disregarding that, do you think that a computer science master’s degree from McGill is comparable to one from Oxford? One thing I like about McGill’s program is that its a 2 year program (which I think would give me more time to do better research).
