MSU to Northwestern, Notre Dame

Hey, Im a freshman at MSU, and i hate it here, and i really want to transfer to Northwestern.

My HS stats - a 3.9 gpa from a prestigious high school in MI, varsity sports, good ec - volunteer, tutoring, and various clubs ( no positions held tho), i got a 29 on the ACT and i did about the same on the SAT, i cant remember tho.

Well , i had personal issues first semester here, so i ended up with a 2.9 . But now second semester i am taking 6 classes instead of 5, and I am expecting to get a 4.0 in all of them. MSU was a safety for me. I volunteer at a womans shelter here , but other than a job, thats all i really have time for. What do you guys think my chances are of getting into Northwestern as junior applicant? I plan on doing summer school and just keep getting 4.0's so my final gpa will be a 3.9. What are some other schools you'd recommend? I just hate the bigger size and that no one here is serious about studying. What are my chances? what ECs should I do?

Oh also, I just become a US resident - I am from England and have lived in Europe (in germany as well) for like 5 years, then i moved over here.

What do you guys think? I reallllly want to go to northwestern.

It's probably best to wait until the after the fall semester of your sophomore year to transfer...since you'll have brought your gpa up (assuming that your second semester grades will reflect future grades), and the adcoms will be less weary of your first term.

Keep your chin up and Northwestern in your sights...the extra semester or two will make you an even more competitive and attractive candidate for the schools you're interested in.

You of curiosity britbabe, why do you hate it so much at MSU... not that you don't have every right to hate the place, as it's totally a personal thing, but I'm just interested in your POV, esp being, originally, from Britain (a place I'm dying to visit)... You should have no trouble transferring to N'westrn... best of luck to you.

its not that i totally hate MSU, but its like, I've always wanted to get out of MI. I mean ,aside from the town where I'm from, MI just doesn't appeal to me. Europe is amazing. i also want to pursue Northwestern, as I want to go to England for Grad school, and I feel Northwestern would help my chances. thank you so much for raising my hopes for northwestern - I am so worried I wont get in. Also, my whole life I have moved every 2-3 years, so I amitching for a move, as i have been in Michigan for like 4years so far.

What about Notre Dame? and will Northwestern be easy to transfer too, or a reach? thanks so much

britbabe, let me say that, I was basing my opinion based on your trend upward at MSU plus your quality HS stats -- particularly since you say you went to a prestigious Michigan HS and were deep in the extracurriculars (and plus, lets face it, all schools will deny it, but your Euro-background definitely gives you a boost over similar American students—you potentially make a student body more diverse; more interesting). But note, top colleges, esp top private ones like Northwestern and ND, often have super strict transfer policies. I know it's all but impossible, for example, to transfer into an Ivy. I'd check with both schools, 1st, but from the outside, I'd still say you look pretty good for both...

Just my guess, but you probably wont find a whole heck of a lot of diff btw the difficulty in transferring in to ND as opposed to Northwestern. They're both super competitive admissions-wise (Northwestern, right now, even ranks higher than U.Chicago in terms of admissions competitiveness)... but check their respective websites, and offices, 1st.
