I am trying to decide between Michigan State and Colorado to transfer to in the fall. Is there a big difference in quality of a degree between these two schools? I am a communications major, is either one known for communications or one not as much? Where do I go?

^^ Not sure about CU in terms of Communication Major, but Communication related majors at Michigan State are top-notch in the nation. Go Green! :)

MSU communication programs lead nation

EAST LANSING, Mich. A once-a-decade ranking by a prestigious association shows that doctoral programs in Michigan State Universitys College of Communication Arts and Sciences rank number one nationally in two key areas of communication studies.

The National Communication Association (NCA) ranks MSU as the nations best in the rapidly growing fields of health communication and communication technology. MSU also is ranked in the top five in several other fields, including international/intercultural communication.

These rankings reflect MSUs acknowledged excellence in communications education and will further enhance our efforts to attract top students, faculty and funding to our campus, said Charles T. Salmon, acting dean of the college.

Each decade, the NCA conducts a survey assessing the reputation of doctoral programs in the field of communication. The NCA is the oldest and largest association promoting communication scholarship and education, with 8,000 members.

The 2004 rankings, announced by the NCAs Doctoral Education Committee at its annual convention in Chicago, encompass almost 100 doctoral programs. Each university nominated its doctoral program for recognition in the major specialty areas of study. Several hundred doctoral faculty nationwide rated each school on the effectiveness of the Ph.D. program in educating researchers.

The five top universities in MSUs areas of specialization:

* Health Communication: MSU, Penn State University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Illinois, University of Georgia
- Communication and Technology: MSU, Illinois, University of Southern California, University of California at Santa Barbara, Stanford University
- Mass Communication: Penn, MSU, Stanford, University of Wisconsin, Southern Cal
- Interpersonal Communication: Illinois, UCSB, Penn State, MSU, Purdue University
- International/Intercultural: UCSB, University of New Mexico, Southern Cal, MSU, University of Maryland
- Organizational Communication: Texas A&M University, UCSB, University of Colorado, University of Texas, Southern Cal

An overall rank order can be computed by averaging the ratings across all of the specialty areas. Overall, MSU ranks No. 2 in doctoral program effectiveness, slightly behind the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Pennsylvania.

It is a tribute to MSU and to our faculty and alumni that a state-funded university can compete successfully with a nationally renowned and heavily endowed Ivy League program, Salmon said.

MSU also ranks second overall on the dimension of scholarly quality of the faculty. Across all specialty areas, the five leading communication programs are Pennsylvania, MSU, University of California at Santa Barbara, Stanford and Illinois.

MSU is the leading public university in the 2004 reputation study. MSU also ranked near the top nationally in the previous NCA reputation study conducted in 1996.
