MSU vs. Oberlin

I have been accepted to both Oberlin College and MSU for Computer Science. I receive about 53k a year at Oberlin and qualify for in-state tuition at MSU.

I know that both are good schools, so I don’t really know which one to go. I’m interested in the athletic spirit of MSU, but I also love many traditions of Oberlin (art rentals, student concerts, etc.)

Can anyone please share with me their thoughts/experience of these schools (and of CS department, if possible.) I would appreciate it!

well, I don’t think MSU is on par with Oberlin…Oberlin is a much more selective and elite college

Not sure, but Michigan State might have better CS facilities & faculty & more course options. In my opinion, you need to decide based on the strength of your major (CS) at either school. Also, you should learn a lot from your classmates, therefore, check out how many CS majors are at each school.

I also would guess CS at MSU is stronger and within that curriculum the caliber of students would be similar to Oberlin. The two schools are very different in environment so weigh that factor also.

Far more important than comparing the CS programs, in my opinion, is the fundamental difference between the kinds of institutions they are. MSU has 50,000+ students; Oberlin has 2900. You would have a vastly different experience at these two places. Start there.

I was going to say this is a fit and feel situation but it really isn’t. I would not suggest a 3/2 program for engineering /cs. It all sounds great on the surface but getting the minimums GPA in engineering is tough for even the best students. There is no guarantee that you will move on to the colleges they state they have an association with. At Michigan State you have a better chance of being successful in CS and its a powerhouse for research. You can get musical experiences at Michigan State. Just do a search. Your musical interests will make a large university small. You will find many with the same interests.

Re #5, the CS major at Oberlin would be a four-year program though, entirely through Oberlin College.

@merc81. Thanks for pointing that out. Not sure what I looked up then but it doesn’t change my mind. Look at the faculty at Oberlin vs MSU and course selection. When I think of Oberlin, I don’t think of CS. MSU just trumps it in research ability and opportunities. Both great schools in their own right but both have their individual strengths.

Thank you very much everyone! I have asked advices from other people as well, and decided to go to MSU ^^

Best of luck to you at MSU, @Hopping!

Thank you :relaxed:!

Congrats. I honestly believe this was your best choice. Good luck.
