MT Class of 2014

I was excepted into the UArts MT program. I am STILL waiting to here from Otterbein college. But Iw as wondering who knows for sure they are going to UArts. I know the programs great. Just have a hard choice

Congratulations on your acceptance to UArts. My D is a sophomore there now and LOVES it. She had choices to make also, and fundamentally she chose Uarts because it really fit with what she wanted for herself and her future. She has no regrets. I wish you luck in your choice. It’s very important that you have a sense that this is the place you are supposed to be. Go with your gut.

thankyou. I was just confused and going there. I’m excited, but I’ve some good and bad about the program like anyone can get in, its a joke, etc. I love to perform so as long as I’m doing what I love is all that matters. But as of right now im positively going to UArts

Super Super congrats on getting in, that’s WONDERFUL!!! It’s such a great school

The whole “anyone can get in” rumor is a lie… they accept around 40 people(deffinently not everyone ha ha)

Have you watched any Uarts videos on youtube? The Uarts student journals and multiple youtube videos have caused me to fall in love with the school.

If you haven’t seen the journals you should totally check them out! [The University of the Arts : Student Journals](http://www.uarts.edu/admission/uartsjournals.html)

No I haven’t been accepted or rejected yet, but I thought I’d chime in my opinion  I recently sent in my video audition ( they recieved it the day of their final audition) sooooo I’m hoping for the best!

Look through the many many threads on the Uarts section of this site and you’ll find some really good info about the program

Super best wishes to you!

Musical_Maranda:

THANKYOU SO MUCH. IM BECOMING MORE AND MORE EXCITED ABOUT THE SCHOOL. SO THERE WILL BE 40 STUDENTS IN MY MUSICAL THEATRE CLASS IS THAT WHAT YOUR SAYING. AND I WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK ON GETTING IN.

Actually last year they accepted about 24 into Musical Theater. About 16 guys and 8 girls. Believe they needed more guys last year so probably different this year. Regular Theater (ie: not musical) also accepts a like number I believe. Not an expert by my D is a freshman this year at UARts. And loves it- as do all the kids I know of who are friends in her classes. Philly is great; tons of wonderful theater around; terrific professors; dorms with each having their own kitchen and bathroom; loves her private voice lessons. I could go on … but you would probably like to hear from an actual student rather than a parent - so Many Congratulations on being accepted mrbroadway! Enjoy this very exciting time. And good luck to you MusicalMaranda.

Oh my bad! Sorry, I heard throught the grapevine that it would be 40 people this year, of coarse I have no proof that that number is correct. Thanks so much for the luck, I’m going to need it, ha ha! I’m running off of 6 rejections, 1 acceptance, and waiting to hear from 4 more schools… sooo luck is greatly needed at the momment!

Oh gosh, no problem, mrbroadway! Just trying to help :-D

musical_Maranda…the thing is…a college accepts more people than the number of slots in the class as they know that not all who get the offer will enroll. So, oregontheatermom is giving you the number in the freshmen class (24) I believe. I don’t know many they accept to yield 24, but maybe the reason you heard the number of “40” is because someone was telling you how many they accept which is not the same as how many are in the freshmen class.

So true soozievt! forgot that part!

I think I had posted earlier on another thread that UArts in the past has accepted about 40 to get a yield of 24. The 40 represented about a 7% acceptance rate. Over the last couple of years, there has been an additional uptick in applications and I think acceptances have dropped to about 6%. As to the “anyone can get in” silliness, the numbers speak for themselves and those who make comments designed to denigrate another school - whether UArts or some other - are usually just showing their ignorance and immaturity. So don’t take the comment seriously.

The reality is the school is filled with very talented students as well as dedicated faculty who are working professionals and effective educators. I happened to see the dress rehearsal of “On Your Toes” tonight and it clearly reflected what the school and its community of students and faculty is capable of. It was a collaboration of the Schools of Theater, dance and Music staged in an 1800 seat proscenium theater owned by UArts. A full student orchestra in a real pit, excellent sets made in the school’s shop, costumes that were made by students in the costume shop which were as professional looking as any I have ever seen at any show, elaborate and superbly choreographed dancing, credible and truthful acting that drew you into the characters and story line. and, parenthetically, while we were there we spoke to several of my daughters friends who are seniors who did UArts’ NYC showcase and were picked up by agents and who have done several auditions in NYC, have received call backs and are awaiting casting decisions.

So, Mrbr0adway, you have every reason to be excited and proud of your accomplishment. Enjoy the moment and don’t doubt for a second that you have some wonderful options. Best of luck in your decision making and future endeavors.

oh :-Dokay! Gotcha! Thanks so much for clearing that up!

MichaelNKat… I have to say you’re pretty amazing… the things you’ve written all over the forums have really helped me, and really lead me to falling in love with the school…you’ve helped sooooo many people and don’t really get the thanks yhat you deserve… so I’m giving yoyu a HUGE thank you for all the help you’ve given! There need to be more people on this site like you… it really says a lot that you’re D had auditions years ago and you’re still here supporting her school… must mean you and her both are loving it! Thank you again

btwz… anyone know how they weigh the audition?.. like do you think they look more for singers who can act( stronger singers), or actors who can sing(stronger actors)… or do you think it’s about even? Do you think the dance audition is highly weighted, or do you think it’s more for placement? I mentioned before that I did a video audition ( I’m posting some of my videos on youtube right now actually… if you’d like to hear them, my username is SaxophoneSingerShort), so I had to choreograph my own dance … annnnd it wasn’t too groovy ha ha  :-P… sooo I’m hoping that isn’t weighte dvery highly…

gah… I’m so anxious to hear from my last 4 schools @_@

Well, I have to say, I auditioned at the unifieds in LA and we were supposed to come prepared with a “demonstration of our dance ability.” I literally did not prepare anything, and just turned on my favorite song and did a random dance to it. AND I got in with an amazing scholarship. So, I would say, dance is not really a huge factor, based on my experiences.

ha ha ha  Well thanks so much! That’s a big relief! Do you have a lot of dance experience?

I was accepted with a good scholarship as well (yay!). I have been dancing in shows for 10 years but have only been taking dance class for 1 year. I would not be considered a “dancer dancer” but I do love it. I’m sure if they see that you love it and you’re truly enjoying yourself you’ll be fine. They can teach you to dance but they can’t teach that. They want to see you be the best you! Good luck!!!

nope! I took ballet when I was like 5, but that definitely does not count haha. I walked out of the audition thinking like oh wow that was embarrassing, but I guess they liked it!

Ah shucks, Musical_Maranda, now you’re going to make me blush  . Seriously though, there are so many knowledgeable people on this forum who routinely share their experience and expertise. Parents, students, college counselors, coaches, school reps, professionals in the business. it’s what makes this forum the premiere place to engage in educational and informative dialogue about everything from the college application/audition process to working in the industry. Soozievt, NotMamaRose and onstage are 3 who immediately come to mind who unstintingly share their information and time. And I continue to post because it seems like yesterday that my daughter was looking at schools during the summer before 11th grade and we were feeling totally overwhelmed and unprepared for what the process requires. This Board and the people on it were instrumental in understanding how to best move forward. So to the extent I can pass along some of the info I have picked up along the way, I am glad to do so.

I would like to also compliment Michael, soozievt, NMR, onstage, and the other “insiders” who post on this forum. I wish every school had a third party poster or three like those people that give so much info about the schools they are familiar with.

Oh gosh, I love to dance! I’ve taken 5 years of dance classes ( in broken segments---- took som when I was a tot for 3 years then quit and started back up in 8th grade, my dance school closed, i waited to find another and didn’t star back up til Junior year, so I’m trying to catch up.) but I’m not very good… deffinently pumped to improve! :-D

Thanks so much!

The dance portion of the audition is really designed just to see if you can move well and follow instructions and direction quickly. Having very well developed technique is not critical. The MT program is looking for singers who can act. Both components are heavily weighted in the audition.
