Hi :) I'm a HS senior from Japan and I'm planning on applying to US colleges to major in MT.
I was wondering if being an international student would be a disadvantage to get accepted. I'm fluent in English (proven by my high TOEFL score and okay SAT score) and have experience in all aspects of MT (singing, acting dancing). I also take the IB Diploma programme at my school.

I don’t think it is a disadvantage! There were international students in my daughter’s college MT program (NYU/Tisch) as well I know some at other programs too.

Working out the audition trips will be more difficult for you of course.

There’s no disadvantge from an artistic perspective, but make sure you check into visa and financial aid aspects, too. Some schools can give NO financial aid to international students, with no exception - Carnegie Mellon, for example.

I don’t think so: the people judging auditions will want to admit students to their school who are committed, and it looks like you are. If you show them that you are capable of doing BFA level work, can take direction, and are pleasant to work with, you will have done your best! Good luck!

Thank you everyone for your opinions! Glad to know that there are some international students in MT. I’m working to get my audition and application materials ready. I’ll most likely be skipping a week off school (yikes!) to go to the states for the auditions.

Also, since it will be hard to fit too many auditions in one week, a few really great schools accepted DVD auditions. So I would check that out!
