Can anyone tell me whether it is possible for a student to do the equivalent of a musical theater major (I know MC doesn’t have a formal MT major) and an academic (like English, history, philosophy, psychology and so on) minor in four years at Muhlenberg?

A friend of mine’s kid is very interested in Muhlenberg but believes that the lack of a formal MT major means she would need to major in theater there, and minor in either voice or dance in order to cover the three-prongs of MT training. She worries this means she wouldn’t be able to squeeze in (within four years) an academic minor, which is important to her?

This doesn’t sound right to me. Can anyone who knows comment? Thanks.

My recollection, from when my daughter applied and visited in the fall of 2006, is that what you have described is very much doable. I recall we had this discussion with Charles Richter, head of the theatre program, and with admissions reps and basically received the same affirmative feedback. Perhaps your friend would benefit by looking at the degree requirements for a theatre performance major, adding in the dance and voice classes and seeing what credits are left over into which an academic minor could be fit. To the extent there is an issue, I would imagine it would be one of juggling the schedule of when particular classes are offered. Your friend should also keep in mind that the classes needed to get the performance training in dance and voice would not necessarily be the same as a dance or voice minor. The minors probably require additional non-performance classes that could be skipped without adversely impacting on the training and would result in credits being freed up for the academic minor.

Sciences: From here, Sounds as if a school like Muhlenberg, may be a good fit, but we’re not familiar with it. We’ll investigate further. This week I am taking him to see Cornell since we’ll be traveling near it, and he is strong academically. He completed the summer high school program at Northwestern this year, his SAT is high ~ Would Cornell fit the bill?
Or is their MT program nonexistent, they have theater and film I saw…However, I see from reading this thread that he could major in theater and take a minor in dance and voice to fulfill the musical theater background. Then again he has many interests which include astro physics and international relations, which acting wouldn’t hurt as far a preparation goes. I love that he’s a “free thinker” and doesn’t want to pigeon hole himself this early but it is important that he find a school that could accommodate these varied interests. Please if anyone had advice, help us.
PS. Northwestern was very nice and at least we know that they have these programs. That’s one.
