MT major with little dance experience

Hey all!

I’m looking at applying to colleges as an Acting / MT major this year. I’m primarily auditioning for acting, but MT schools are also on my list. However, I have a severe lack of dance training. As of right now I’m in a beginners ballet class, and I’m a good mover, but not a dancer. I tried to tailor my list of schools so that most are less selective and more focused on acting / voice. My list is as follows:

Carnegie Mellon
Baldwin Wallace
Point Park
The Hartt School
CCPA Roosevelt (Voice)
U Arts

Like I said, I’m mainly applying to Acting schools, so this list is smaller. Any advice for schools is should add or remove? Any advice for further steps to take to prepare for dance auditions? Let me know, thanks!

You say you tried to pick schools that are less selective, but your list includes Carnegie Mellon (literally the MOST selective BFA program in the country, with an acceptance rate of 1 or 2 percent) and Point Park and BW, which are also extremely selective.

Hartt and UArts aren’t quite as selective, but all that means is that their MT acceptance rate is 7-10 percent instead of 1-5 percent. Still not an easy admit by any means! (But Hartt’s acting acceptance rate is a bit higher than for MT, I’d guess 15-20 percent or so.)

Here’s a helpful thread with info on which programs are more and less selective, and advice on creating a balanced list:

As for dance, I know that Carnegie Mellon does not have dance in the audition, so you don’t have to worry about dance for that particular school.

Syracuse started a new program this year called Actor/Singer which is specifically geared toward students who don’t have extensive dance training.

Honestly, pretty much all MT schools are very selective these days! You might want to add OKCU to your list. They have an acting degree, as well as MT and VP. They level students in dance each semester and place you where you need to be. My dd is a freshman there this year and she had never had a dance class until her Senior year! Keep up the ballet lessons! Best of luck!
