As an incoming freshman, I'm wondering if it's worth it to purchase son a metro card? If so does anyone
Know what the best plan (if is one) would be?

Is he a commuter? If he’s going to be living in the dorms, then he should buy is metro cards at the kiosks as needed. The monthly cards are quite expensive. (I have an incoming Fordham freshman, but also a rising junior at another college a few blocks away. She lived in the dorms the first two years and bought Metro cards as needed (you can refill them.) This year she will live off-campus and will need to buy a monthly card which is a significant expense. HTH.

Thanks for the reply. He is on campus and looking further into MTA was thinking about the pay-per-ride option. Being new to the city not sure how much they go off campus via MTA.

No rush in getting a card. Pay per time for now.

My dd attended NYU for the last three years and found her needs ebbed and flowed. I would let him pay by the ride first knowing what the break even is and try that for a month or two. If he finds for two months he consistently hitting the mark then have him purchase it. I know for my Fordham freshman we are going to hold off for a couple of months.

My daughter has a metrocard and just reloads it as needed.

If he’s living on campus, he definitely doesn’t need the monthly card. Those are only worth it for commuters. For now, I suggest getting a regular card, which you can buy at any kiosk in the city. $2.25 deducts each time he uses it. Do not do the single ride options, since they charge you more!

My S usually puts around $50 a month on his card.
