Mudd Hater

Inspired by the Harvey Mudd vs Rice vs Columbia post, I want to hear some rants about how you hate Harvey Mudd.
You can be a current student, a student who transfered, or not related at all.
I'm sure everyone has some kind of hatred.

=(

…

hey
it’s good to hear both sides. that’s how you really know the school :)

Its sometimes overwhelming being in a place thats too awesome, ya know?

I don’t sleep much.

But that’s because I’m having fun and being slightly irresponsible with my time management.

Eh, it’s pass/fail for another couple weeks.

I have my own regrets and doubts about Harvey Mudd as an alum.

If you are really interested to know about them, PM me.

“I have my own regrets and doubts about Harvey Mudd as an alum.

oo oo oOooo I want to hear them! I think I’ll just grab you on AIM/FB

So other than a lack of sleep, Mudd is perfect? Come on, help these Mudd-y kids make a reasoned decision. Please?

the dorms aren’t THAT nice (but who cares?)

West is almost always trashed, thus not aesthetically pleasing (my mom would have freaked out haha)

It’s not that well known to the general public (I’ve had people ask me if it was a community college)

It’s extremely hard to do well (GPA wise) which can be discouraging to the many kids who work hard and had straight As in highschool

Everyone knows everyone’s business… somewhat like high school (smaller campus)

When I toured, this one kid was sleeping in another dorms common area because his room was turned into a bar… he wasn’t too happy…

I don’t think any of these are a big deal. I mean, every college has flaws. It’s whatever.

Although I like my Hum 1 instructors, I have unbounded hatred for that class. I feel that it wastes a lot more time than any of my other classes without necessarily improving my writing.

Luckily, they’re rolling out an entirely new format for that class next year, so yay?

I liked the dorms actually.

West is almost always trashed, thus not aesthetically pleasing (my mom would have freaked out haha)
I LOVED that. I thought it was so cool

It’s not that well known to the general public (I’ve had people ask me if it was a community college)
yeah, that kinda sucks

It’s extremely hard to do well (GPA wise) which can be discouraging to the many kids who work hard and had straight As in highschool
True. But I don’t really mind that

Everyone knows everyone’s business… somewhat like high school (smaller campus)
This is something I am somewhat weary about. Having been a boarding student for two years, I know how it’s like when everyone knows whatever goes on, and you HAVE to meet people in your school so many times, even those you don’t like.

When I toured, this one kid was sleeping in another dorms common area because his room was turned into a bar… he wasn’t too happy…
Ouch. Uh… I don’t no what to say to that

And about that Hum 1 class. I hope they do change it to a better format cuz I personally really like english, but many times I felt that english classes were sometimes rather not useful.

–I would say that Core is ridiculous, but I was talking to an old old alum from Mudd once and he told me about the good old days when people had to take PChem for core too… now I plan on taking PChem sometime in the future aka senior year for fun and pain, but no I would not appreciate it if it was in the core.

And you entering people will have it even better! 3 semesters of math, oh boy! Only half a semester of special relativity, thank god! I don’t remember what other curriculum changes. Less lab?

But yeah there’s far less freedom to select courses than I thought there was, especially with the hum requirements. I knew coming in that there were 12 courses you had to take, 6 on campus, 6 in various distributions, 4 in your concentration (these are not mutually exclusive, I know that adds up to 16) but it didn’t really hit me how restrictive that was until I was actually here. Also, getting into Mudd hums is ridiculous. Plus major and core stuff.

–There are too many ants in the dorms. Sure, they disappear by October, but for a while it’s horrifying.

–You know, I don’t actually think having a decent GPA is that impossible, although you do have to drop your standards for a decent GPA by a bit, like a 3.7 is really fabulous, but the amount of work you have to put in to get grades that good doesn’t seem worth it sometimes. I do sometimes find myself wishing I had gone to a different college, because I don’t think all the stress is worth it. And it’s like, oh well I’m really getting the bang for the buck in my education here because these classes are so effing hard, but for some classes I feel like the tests don’t push me to even higher places and push me to learn more, they’re just there to be impossible and make me sad. This is very few classes though, mostly yes they’re difficult but they do force me to be creative and I do learn a lot. But I’m still not sure about the work vs sleep/free time deal.

–Um, what else… Mudd’s incredibly white. Like, WOAH white. Yeah, I don’t like that.

From what I’ve seen from my sister:

It’s freakin’ expensive.

Not many people know about it (my dad has been so nasty to her because she turned down other better known schools to go to HMC).

It’s ugly.

It’s really hard to do well GPA-wise. Only four 4.0s in its history so far.

They don’t accept AP credits.

But honestly, as for #2, everybody in the math/science field know HMC. And I say its pros outweigh the cons.

It’s almost 1 am, I’m really tired, and I’m not sure if I want to get into this issue right now…so like tiyusufaly said, you can PM me and I can voice my regrets/thoughts/concerns/complaints/etc/etc/etc. And maybe I’ll write a public posting later…

And while things like low GPA’s, name recognition, room size, and things like that are potential things to dislike, they aren’t the things you’ll be lying in bed thinking about at the end of the day when you’re questioning why you’re at Mudd…because yeah, “every college has its flaws” and that’s not what makes you “hate” it (to use the thread name).

So yeah, PM me.
