Hi everyone! I am considering applying to Tufts next year, and I am wondering what the multimedia arts minor is exactly? I am having a hard time figuring out what the types of classes and things are involved with this minor. If there are any students currently in this program could you tell me any and all about it? Thanks!

Hi Verbena!

I’m a current sophomore in the school of engineering at Tufts, and I’m pursuing the multimedia arts minor. I’m a computer science major but I really love art and music so when I found out about the minor I was very excited.

The minor itself is five classes spread out through the four years plus two classes taken your senior year. Two of the five classes are picked from a list of approved courses of multimedia practice, and the other three can be pretty much any course in art, music, dance, drama, computer science, electrical engineering etc. You just have to get those courses approved by your minor advisor. The one caveat is that you can only count one class in the field of your major (comp sci for me) towards your minor. I want to take as many non-engineering courses as possible so all my minor courses will probably be drama or music. Then, your senior year you take a half-credit course in the fall to plan the project you’ll complete in the spring for a full credit.

So if your major were Dance or Music, most of your minor requirements would be filled by engineering and computer science courses. Vice versa for an electrical engineer or CS major. Some of the courses I’ve used to fill the minor requirements include costume design, music theory, choir and computer-assisted design for theatre (this is one of the approved practice courses).

I hope this helps you, and feel free to message me if you want more info

Thanks so much! I am wondering if there are any sort of graphic design or other computer aided art classes, but I guess a little digging on the Tufts website would answer my question. Regardless, I am thankful for your response! It sounds like a really neat minor to contrast your major.

@Verbenatea, Did you end up applying? DD is also interested in this minor and in graphic design in particular. I am interested in your experience and where else you may have applied.
