I think I picked what I want to major in (multimedia), but as I go looking for school’s with that major I find combined majors and I don’t know what to pick that could benefit me. I really want to work in the music industry and maybe be a concert promoter who specializes in marking concerts and doing anything digital (multimedia). What major do you think I should look for? It would, of course, have multimedia, but like should it have communications or what? I think multimedia would be the concentration. (For example: Mass Communication and Journalism B.A. with Multimedia Option). I want to be a concert promoter that also knows how to promote artist (not just their concerts).
I think it’s more important to find a school that’s a good fit for you in a variety of areas.
Multimedia is a major that isn’t found everywhere, so you’d be eliminating some schools that might otherwise be a good fit. There are lots of majors that can help you get into the field you seek, though - sometimes they’re called media studies, sometimes it’s in a communications major, and even marketing or business with some classes in communications or media studies can get you where you want.
I would imagine that most concert promoters and artist representatives didn’t major in multimedia; business and/or marketing is just fine, maybe with some coursework in multimedia. It would seem that the most important part is actually some internships or part-time jobs in the industry so you can start to meet people and make the connections necessary to break into the field. You may want to, for example, choose a college in or nearby a major city that has a lot of concerts and get a job at the stadium or with record companies interning on those concerts. Party promoter jobs are actually pretty common for college students, and you can meet a lot of folks in the business through that.
