I want to coordinate events such as music festivals, and work on large events. However, I am unsure what area would be best to major in. I am interested in transferring to Berkeley. They offer media studies, but I am still not quite sure if that would be the right area. What majors do you guys think apply to this job field?
Well, I think you can major in anything. This is going to be like event planning, and a bit of entertainment business, maybe you would work at a venue coordinating that or you could work for a performer’s team getting it all hammered out. Either way, though, what seems to matter more is internship experience and connections rather than the specific major. If you could get into Haas for the undergraduate business program that might be a boon, but otherwise it really doesn’t matter what you major in (and Berkeley doesn’t have the kind of pre-professional majors that would be specific to this, like music industry/business or event planning or something).
The media studies undergraduate major is a theoretical, analytical, liberal arts major there. They’re interested in how the mass media impacts society and vice versa. It’s not a professional degree. If you look at the curriculum, you’ll take some classes in the social sciences and then take some classes analyzing the interface between media, culture, and society.
