So sad - a freshman. I walked many times next to the creek where her body was found. It’s around the corner from my dad’s building. First on-campus murder there since the Tower shootings in 1966.
One of those horrible nightmares for a parent. My heart goes out to her family and for the university for the aftermath they have to deal with when these things happen.
So horribly sad!! Every parents worst nightmare.

There has been an arrest. Only info is that the accused is 17. http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/arrest-made-killing-university-texas-student-haruka-weiser-n552991
I’m glad to hear they have arrested someone. I wonder if she knew him.
Greg Fenves was a professor in my engineering department when I was at UT. A great guy. It’s sad he’s having to deal with this at the beginning of his term as President.
@MaineLonghorn - I now finally understand your name (as a forever New Englander, thought the longhorn part was just referring to moose antlers, though I see now your picture actually isn’t a moose… lol)
Sorry I am just making the connection due to this truly horrible event.

According to the arrest affidavit and news articles, he was a recent runaway from foster care who was among Austin’s homeless population. They have video of him following her, pulling a shiny rigid object from his pocket and then returning to his bike limping two hours later. He was picked up Monday for starting a fire and taken to a homeless shelter. After a portion of the video was released, someone made a connection and reported it. APD went back to the scene of the fire and found her shoes and books. They found her MacBook among his possessions at the shelter when they arrested him.
This is the first murder on UT’s campus since the Tower shootings. It is not the first case of crime on campus due to the large homeless population in Austin.
I would be curious how other campuses in large urban environments deal with this issue.
This will strengthen support for concealed carry.
@206fall2016 I had thought about that but the victim was 18 and not legally allowed to carry in Texas where the law requires you to be 21 to get a license to carry.
