DS was invited to be a Murphy Institute Scholar. Can anyone tell us about the program? Is it very selective? Is there a lot of incremental work involved? Is it worthwhile to pursue?

Thanks for the link! Does anyone know more?

I also got the invitation, but i've never heard of it before.....

bump.........

There are about 14 murphy scholars this year and it just started with the class of 2011, you get to do research but not right away so you get to adjust to college, so fr the first quarter you will just go to a seminar once a week and have edc (engineering design and comm. ) with the other murphy scholars

Thanks catacat. What is the planned curriculum for the rest of the year? Is this a very competitive program?

Also, what is Dean's Scholar - is that different? Can anyone tell us what that involves?

every murphy scholar is a dean's scholar, it doesn't mean much except that you get to eat lunch with the mccormick deans like twice a semester.
murphy is competitive in that everyone is brilliant but then again most people in mccormick are...it just makes for an interesting edc section, you don't notice much difference b/c it starts very slowly but i feel that the opportunities you get from it are endless. you get to do a lot of networking and definitely the biggest plus is getting to be involved in your major project

oops, posted too early
anyways, i suggest that if you were invited to be a murphy scholar to at least try it out the advising is amazing and there's not much to lose

I just got an invitation today! Can any current Murphy Scholars shed some light on this?

i got one too!
