Music 27...

Has anyone taken it? Is it an easy A?

Yes, according to pickaprof 75% of the class had A's of some kind. Although the professor is different for this semester, I don't think it'll change too much. I have the textbook and cd's if you want to buy them. I took it last semester.

Really easy A. I studied for the midterms the night before the tests and didn't study for the final and was able to get an A+. I fell asleep a lot in lecture too. It's a great class to balance out tough classes.

Is it easy only if you have a good music background though (are good at counting beats, hearing notes, finding major/minor/root chords, etc.)?

You don't have to have any music background. It's more of a history class than it is a music theory course. The listening questions can be any of the following:

Identify the genre of music and give reasons.
Identify the composer and give reasons.
Is the piece in major or minor?
Is the piece in duple or triple meter?

(Once you take the course and start learning about the different musical periods in history, these questions are cake. The professors/readings do a good job of highlighting what needs to get you through the listening exams).

That's as difficult as the questions get for the listening portion, and the short answers are just pure memorization of facts. The listening portion is made to be really easy though, so don't feel intimidated about counting beats or distinguishing between minor/major. The professor knows it's a survey course and chooses music samples from your assigned HW.

There are no essays, right?

The short answer section is usually followed by 1-2 essay questions (2 paragraphs will suffice). I took Music this fall, so your professor will probably change things up.

I believe last semester's Music 27 professor is teaching Music 128B this semester...anyone taking that?
