Music and Art at Brown

Is it difficult to get involved in the music scene (with orchestra, private lessons, etc.) at Brown, especially if you are not necessarily majoring in it? How strong are the fine arts there (I know you can take classes at RISD, but I’m really just wondering how enthusiastic people are about music and art at Brown itself, and how involved you can get, quality of instruction there)? Thanks!

You can join the orchestra without being a music major. All you have to do is audition, and for the strings at least, it's not very hard to get in. The conductor is awesome. From what I've heard, people who remain in the orchestra after freshman year are extremely dedicated and love it.

rabo do you know anything about jazz or Afro-Latin jazz? I can't seem to get in touch with anyone at the Music Department, which is kind of turning me off...did you email anyone?

I've never tried emailing the music department. I don't know a whole lot about it (I just got here) but I have some friends into jazz, so I will ask them and get back to you.
