<p>I was always planning to minor in music, but then I found that Brown doesn’t have minors, so if I go what would I do instead? I also haven’t heard a lot about the music program at Brown, so I was wondering, is it good? Is it easy to get involved and perform in different groups? Is it very competitive? How are practice rooms? Is it easy to have lessons? I play flute and piano, so how are the teachers?</p>
<p>I can't tell you much, just that you could also major in music. as far as I know many Brown students double-major so I don't think it's a problem if you major or minor in music.</p>
<p>a "minor" is a fairly meaningless designation that is only necessary at schools with very structured and pre-determined curriculums. since brown's curriculum is open, you can concentrate in whatever subjects you like, and then take whichever and as many music classes you like without having to fulfill "minor" requirements</p>

<p>I'm in the Brown chorus and planning to double major including ethnomusicology.</p>
<p>The music program here is fantastic. There are a ton of ways to get involved if you don't think you want to do a major -- you can take as many classes as you want even if you're not a major, you can get involved with performance groups on campus (a capella is big, but the classical groups like chorus and orchestra are also wonderful and popular), you can participate in musicals or the Original Music Group (a student organization that performs student-composed music), or even start your own group. There's definitely a lot of talent here, but if you're really interested in music, you should be able to find a way to make it work for you.</p>
<p>There are also lots of classical concerts and things by Brown groups as well as visitors on campus, and Boston and New York are pretty easy to get to if you really like seeing world class performances of classical (or any) music.</p>
<p>IloveBrown, how do you like being in chorus? How often are rehearsals? Does your group travel a lot? Just wondering, because my hs chorus isn't all that great and I'm really looking for a superior choral experience with a talented group and director....</p>
<p>I too am in the chorus (as well as the band and the Brown Derbies, but those aren't classical, though they kick serious ass....). We rehearse twice a week for 2 hours. My HS chorus was absolutley awful. There are still certain songs today that I cannot even hear without painful flashbacks to their greusome butchering. Fortunatley, I was not turned off to chorus then, because I got to participate in All State (NY) and All Eastern choruses this past year, and it showed me that chorus doesn't have to suck.
Anyway, the Brown chorus is awesome. This weekend we have a concert, and we will be singing awesome pieces in the following languages:</p>
<p>Latin, Spanish, Bosnian, French, Hebrew, and actual Lappish gibberish (I am not kidding) as spoofed by the people of Finland. Oh, and some English, just for kicks.</p>

<p>We're not so much a marching band as we are a scatter band (<a href="http://www.brown.edu/Students/Brown_Band)%5B/url%5D">http://www.brown.edu/Students/Brown_Band)</a>. It's difficult to expain in a nutshell, but we're the most fun band in the NCAA. We're really laid back, make dirty cheers, and mint buttons (<a href="http://www.brown.edu/Students/Brown_Band/buttons.shtml%5B/url%5D">http://www.brown.edu/Students/Brown_Band/buttons.shtml</a>) for each game, making fun of the opposing school.</p>
<p>The Brown Derbies (<a href="http://www.brownderbies.com%5B/url%5D">www.brownderbies.com</a>, though its not been updated since the new guys and I got in) is the worlds greatest a cappella group, that just happens to be at Brown :P haha. A cappella (all voices, no instruments) is quite big at Brown. We have something like 12 a cappella groups, with a 13th on the way.</p>
<p>Chorus is fabulous. Our director is hilarious but very thorough. We do really fun music... as Adam Kidabra said, we're singing everything from the Faure Requiem to random fake Lappish folk songs. The talent in the room is amazing and very exciting, especially compared to my high school chorus. The group takes a major tour every couple of years -- this summer, we're going to Argentina!</p>
