Are there any musicians here aiming for top schools?

How do you show "passion" and "excellence" in music on your college resume without winning awards? I don't do music competitively, I do it for pure enjoyment. I'm a guitarist in a band which has become pretty successful. I am in two different jazz ensembles and I play in a classical guitar quartet, along with running/playing at a variety of charity shows, but I do not win awards for music. Is this a problem?

Lead Guitarist/Vocalist I should have probably said.

Heh, not sure if college admission committees will be able to appreciate the prog rock that I write. =P

Write an essay about the follies of managing your own band (do you?) and organizing gigs..

CD probably wouldn't hurt either :P

I'm a performer. Classical vocalist and musical theatre performer.

A lot of top schools (like Swarthmore) allow you to send a CD displaying your talents, even if you're not a music major. Vassar has the "YourSpace," which... if you compose, you could put some music there?

I want to maybe minor in music or something, or at least actively pursue it throughout college. I'm sure a CD will help, and I'm sure that they'll be pleased with my skill, but is that all? I mean, what do you other noncompetitive musicians do?

I'm a competitive musician, so I can't really help you there. My school is an arts magnet and I am a vocal music student, so I am required to compete. I would, even if I weren't required to do so.

Do you take lessons? Do you publish any of your music?

If you are skilled, perhaps you could teach to younger kids.

Yeah.. I'm.. a competitive musican too. Although I don't plan on majoring in music in college, I do plan on completing at least a minor, and continuing to be involved in music in college and afterwards.

Don't underestimate the power of the recording and an essay.

I agree, classof09. Passion is passion.

Music is as good as eny other EC. Send in a CD, or write an essay. However, if you're in a band, can't you describe that in your resume or activities section?
