How are the ensembles at UC Davis? (Orchestra, Wind, etc.)
I read that auditions are required for Orchestra/Concert Band. Is it hard to get in? Does anyone know what the requirements are? Has anyone participated in these groups?

Thanks!

BUMP, i’d also like to know about the music programs, especially marching band-uh, and if there’s any choirs/a cappella groups on campus?

Also, how many units do you get for participating in an ensemble group (per quarter)?

I’m not too familiar with music scene as I used to be. I was in the UCD symphony for a number of years until classes got the better of me.

Joining the symphony will NOT give you any credits to any major but will add 2 units to your overall units. I don’t know if it is still the same since Dr. Holloman had retired. If I’m not mistaken, it is run by Christian Baldini now. The times for practice was on tuesday and thursday starting at 7pm and they usually go to applebee’s afterwards.

In order to sign up for a quartet you must also be enrolled in the UCD symphony. A tricky way around this is to take a class that conflicts with the symphony practice times.

I’m not familiar with marching band other than they play at Picnic Day (battle of the bands).

I am considering auditioning for the concert band this quarter. But if I decide not to do a band this quarter, do I still have to audition later on? Also, how difficult is the sightreading in the audition?

You probably will have to do another audition unless you make a considerable impression. The sightreading piece may vary between music departments but for the symphony, the conductor gave me a section of the score of Carmen. They do not expect you to perform at professional level as the sightreading is just meant to test that you at least have some idea of how to quickly read music.
