Is that even possible? I really like music, at least, a lot of people say I exhibit the qualities of having a passion for it and I'd like to teach it...but I also think I have what it takes to do engineering. My main motivation in wanting to study engineering is so that I can expose myself to the rigor as well as being able to take all these cool classes related to math and physics. Another benefit would be to be able to teach those subjects if I fall upon hard times(I don't see many open jobs out there for teaching music, but I do like it a lot) I'm kind of searching for the best of both worlds here...wondering if it's even possible. I also might have a little trouble with money(won't most of us?) I'm a hispanic female, I'm second in my class, I've played in the Texas All-State band, been drum major for 3 years, got a 33 on my ACT and a 2240 on my SAT, 5's in all the AP's I've taken(Cal AB, Physics B, WHAP, APUSH, Spanish, English Lang.) and plan to perform similarly next year. So I suppose this also a chance me post. Also, if it takes doing the whole college thing during the summer, I'd like to finish as fast as it is possible so as not to not kill myself and have a good time. Appreciate any help!

Engineering is one of the most rigid and time-consuming of all majors. A couple of the engineering degree programs require overloading classes for 1-3 semesters just to be able to graduate in 4 years.

Here is the recommended course of study for MechE

[Bachelor of Science : Mechanical Engineering : University of Rochester](http://www.me.rochester.edu/major-minor/major.html#fouryear_program)

As you can see you will little free space in your schedule for extras classes in education or music.

I believe --though I’m not 100% certain-- that the music education dept is at Eastman, not URoch. If that’s true and you want to double major in engineering AND music education you will need to apply to both Eastman and URoch.

However, you can major in music, minor in music or take a cluster in music at UR.

Here’s the music dept’s homepage

URoch will allow you to credit for AP Calc AB, but if you major in engineering you won’t be to use your Phys B credits. (You need calc based physics for an engineering major).

URoch does not allow the use of AP credits (in Eng Lang) regardless of score to place out of the freshman writing requirement either.

Your history APs would only be useful if you are going to major or minor in history. You cannot used AP credits to fulfill cluster requirements and URoch doesn’t have any distribution requirements. Same would be true of the Spanish.

I know this is probably disappointing, but it is what is. Many students at UR have excess, unused AP credits on their transcripts. I know my D certainly did.

One other thing-- URoch has an 8 semester rule

Thank you for the info, it’s an eye-opener and was VERY helpful

My kid has friends who major in Music & stuff like Biochem. But engineering is nuts because of the course load. Engineering is the exception to the 3 cluster rule: you only need 2 because you’re already taking so many classes. People do minor in Music and take really hard course loads.

Bringing in Eastman opens another can of worms. You’re talking a ton of work at one of the top music schools in the world and then work on top of that.
Requires that special measure of insanity.

Actually, students are only required to take 2 clusters plus a major so long as that covers each of the 3 major divisions (humanities, social sciencee and natural sciences).

Engineering majors are only required to take 1 cluster (in either social sciences or humanities) because of the intensity of their program.

OP, you seem to have a tons of interests–and that’s a good thing–but you may need to narrow your focus a bit in college or be willing to do a 5 year or longer program.

I know you said you were willing to attend summer classes–but there are 2 things you should know: 1) summer classes are mostly only lower level classes; 2) FA doesn’t cover the cost of summer classes

I typed the numbers wrong about the clusters. Oops.

Music ed as a major is very rigid in its requirements at most schools. Music ed students generally take 18 credits per semester just to graduate in 4 years. If you try to add an engineering major to that it would take extra years…Why not do engineering as undergrad take some music classes and then if you are still interested get a masters in music ed. Good luck you sound like you’ll do well in whatever field you decide to study.

While engineering students are only required to do a single cluster, they must still take a single class in the category of a cluster they did not choose. So if your cluster is in humanities then you need a single class in social science and vise versa.

And you are expected to take an additional natural science class on top of the Eng curriculum which they suggest as physics 3. So in the end, engineering majors are only getting reduced one class since a cluster is 3 classes.

You definitely want to use some AP credit for Calc and physics if you can.

Sounds like the pending approval Music/Audio Engineering Major might be a good fit. I think it will mix ECE and music curricula. Not sure if this would be sufficient if you wanted to eventually teach music but it fits your interests perfectly
