Can we run this back a moment, please. Getting real on the living arrangement side of this might be another starting place. $600/month for a place to live in NYC? Not a realistic idea at all. OP, have you explored rental prices in that area, because when you do, I think you’re going to have to re-think your plan. Also, what are you doing as far as a visa? In order to remain here for a few years, you’re going to have to have a Student Visa and to get that, you’re going to have to be accepted and prove enrollment at a school here.
There are also different rules for non-resident aliens seeking teacher certification and they vary from state to state. It’s a lot to consider and sift through, so it would be worth taking time to research each facet of this planned move to see which things need to be tended to in which order.

That is why I asked if he was sharing rent with 3 other guys or his girlfriend. 600 seemed very optimistic to me for NYC. Also why I suggested living outside the city and commuting on weekends to visit his lady. But he seems to have an apartment lined up.

I actually do have an apartment lined up, thanks for that.

And about the visa, I will enter on a work visa / student visa through admission to the college. and in either case, I have a french passport that will get me in the US for 3 months without a visa, to set everything straight about the F-1 student visa.

About the teacher certification for aliens - does anyone have information on this issue?

[USCIS is a fedreal government site.

I would then look at specific states’ department of education websites. The NY site is here New York State Education Department](<a href=“USCIS - United States Citizen and Immigration Service Info”>USCIS - United States Citizen and Immigration Service Info).

The NY Music Educators Association webpage is here NYSSMA, which may also contain some additional links and info.

You may also want to look at other states in the Northeast region, as well just to get an idea of potentially varying requirements.

Perhaps you have not put in enough research initially into your plan. Mezzo’sMama broached valid points about special rules, that I was not aware of.
