Music History at Rice

Does anyone have any experiance with the Music History program at Rice? I am primarily concerned with what they look for in an applicant.

Oh, and this is my first post, so hello y'all.

I'm pretty sure that you have to have some performance ability, and there's only one musicologist undergrad that my former-Shepherd-musi boyfriend can remember... Check out the following page for Shepherd School admissions requirements.

http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~musi/prospect/index.html

In terms of audition requirements, you need to contact the Shepherd School like it says on the audition form.

There are some good musicologists at Rice, though... They're regularly publishing books and such. It's a good department within the music school.

http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~musi/undergraduate/history.html

There is a sample class schedule at the above web address, so from the required courses within the major, you can get a sense of what their musicology department values in its applicants. Like it says, you'll almost certainly have to continue taking lessons in your primary instrument, so having a primary instrument to begin with is rather necessary.

Good luck!

im not sure if music history has much to do with actually getting into to the shephard school as if you were planning to major in music..but i would double check. and if you still have questions, you can always call the admissions office.

Yup, you have to get into the Shepherd School for music history just the same.

I should have clarified, sorry.

What I meant to ask was do any of you know how they decide who gets to enter their music history program from their applicants for that area of study, and a rough idea of how many apply?

Well, if aibarr is correct, then you must first be admitted to the Shepherd School. For them to accept you, you must submit all necessary material for undergrad admissions and then you must audition in front of a panal of Shepherd school professors. I believe the panal also interviews you, but I'm not quite sure. I have no idea how many apply, but the Shepherd school is one of the best in the nation.
