some good songs to check out by ben folds are: landed, brick, the luckiest, annie waits, zak and sara

the new shins album "wincing the night away" is also really good

I love Ray Lamontagne.

Silversun Pickups also are an absolutely fantastic band, their album 'Carnavas' is probably the strongest from top to bottom of any that I've listened to in the last 18 months (even stronger than Kanye's).

YouTube - Silversun Pickups - Lazy Eye

YouTube - Silversun Pickups - Well Thought Out Twinkles

Slayer
Lamb of God
Children of Bodom
Metallica

Yes, I like metal.

To each his own :)
Great music guys, keep 'em coming!

Elliot Smith is absolutely amazing in every sense of the word. Once you give him a few listens you'll be hooked. YouTube - Elliott Smith - Angeles (from Lucky 3)

The first album by The Shins is quite good as well, check out Caring is Creepy or New Slang at first.

I've always been addicted to The Beatles, try digging a bit deeper into their catalogue if you want to hear some great stuff. Some other classics to rediscover are Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, and the Kinks.

Iron & Wine has put out some excellant material as well.

Muse is straight out addicting. YouTube - Muse - Time is running out

Never neglect looking into rap as well, old school West Coast such as Dr. Dre, Snoop, and 2pac will never let you down.

I'm a metal guy, but i'll give you some less "metal;y" bands...
Killswitch Engage..."My Curse", "The End of Heartache"
Skindred- this is one of the most interesting bands i have heard- here is a line directly from their song "Nobody"......
"Blend up the Ragga metal punk hip-hop
Unity sound killer groove non stop"
So as you can see from the lyric, its a blend of reggea, punk and metal, its even dance.

Radiohead, Sublime, Streetlight Manifesto, Operation Ivy, Sigur Ros

Quite a variety ^^

how about newer music? 2007 was a pretty good year. m.i.a., justice and animal collective were probably the most popular releases (alongside radiohead of course) but there were a lot of good albums.
electronic music: justice, the field, burial, amon tobin, holy (f-word)
"indie" rock: spoon, black kids, black lips, animal collective, panda bear, grizzly bear, les savy fav, deerhoof, of montreal, andrew bird
rap: ghostface, lil wayne, wu-tang, saul williams, dizzee rascal

check out any of those. you might not like them but at least you will be "hip" as the kids say!

Pink Floyd (especially if you and chronic are two peas in a pod)
Led Zeppelin
Sublime (most college kids listen to'em)

i second Muse: starlight, unintended, stockholm syndrome, new born, invincible, assassin, etc.

Modest Mouse (my favorite band ever, I have every one of their CD's)
Cake
Blaqk Audio
Arctic Monkeys
Daft Punk
Franz Ferdinand
John Mayer
Of Montreal

That's enough for now...

If you're okay with rap, I have a few suggestions:

Akrobatik
Blood of Abraham
Cormega
Danger Mouse
Junk Science
Little Brother
Roll Deep
Scarface
Visionaries
YT Cracker

If you like those, I'd be happy to suggest others, as I'm a big fan of offbeat rap.
