does anyone know some good schools for this in states of Florida and California? I obviously know about USC and UMiami I have also heard good things about FAU (Florida Atlantic).

Doesn’t specifically answer your question, but you might want to take a look through these:

I know a little bit about the “Commercial Music” program at FAU. It is a BM program and is audition based. I believe that they have a “creative track” and a “technology track”. Information is right on the music website, they do not have their own school of music but have a music major. As I remember, they are trying to build this program, have their own radio show, and have faculty who have come from UMiami to head this particular program. FAU does not attract the strongest students musically or academically, but could be a good choice if you want a more local school.

The admissions people at FAU were very nice and helpful. (My S was interested in music business when he began his college search but decided to concentrate on performance for undergrad ). Teachers were very willing to spend time speaking to both me and my S. You did not say what your major instrument is, I am more familiar with strings. We know the conductor and several of the teachers there, wonderful people and they are trying to build a more competitive program.

If you cannot get any info from the main music department office, contact the professors from your specific instrument and major of interest.

FAU is a newer, smaller State U within the huge Florida system. If you are from Florida, you will probably be able to get a higher level merit award at this school. It is in the wealthy city of Boca Raton with all the trappings that go along with that location which could be either a plus or minus for you.

U Miami is the premier Music Business and Technology program in the state but you must have the academic grades along with the higher level of musical talent to get into that program. If you qualify, however, they can be very generous with merit money. If you are interested in the technology and engineering side at UM, you must have high level high school math and science courses such as AP calculus, to be accepted in to that track and this program is highly academic.

If you give more info about your instrument and background we may be able to give more specific information. Good Luck.
