Hey guys, I am in my second semester of sophomore year of high school. I plan on applying to drexel for music technology and was wondering of what my chances of getting in so far are:
GPA: approx. 3.3 (school doesnt reveal gpa until end of junior year)
Our school doesnt do rank
I take a commercial music class at my school, and next year i am taking a recording class as well as a radio internship class
I have my own show on my schools radio station and will probably be offered an officer position next year
I am in my schools band and plan on graduating with a five-year sequence
My freshman year I had no extra curriculars but this year I have marching band, the radio show i mentioned, political science club, and astronomy club
Next year I hope to do a lot of volunteering and join/start street teams for bands
I also may help in managing a band but that is uncertain
This Summer i will be getting a job (hopefully at a music store)
So what do you think my chances of getting in are so far?
P.S. I may be getting an internship at Atlantic Records in NYC at the end of my junior year

I’ve been waitlisted. I’m currently in the Elementary Education major but I’m also very interested in the Music Industry major too. Because it’s so competitive, I’m very concerned though because it seems as though you have to be certain because only a certain amount of students can get into the program. I’m also concerned because it seems as though other people have a lot of experience already in this field. I have none. What can I do? What else can I do? What are they looking for when considering students into the program? Does it have to be official work? Can it be pure interest? Sorry for the questions but I’m really curious and very nervous.

g8torbait1 : If you still haven’t heard back, you should be hearing from them within the next couple weeks. Also, random, but where are you from? I kind of assume your username has something to do with the Florida Gators but maybe that’s just because I’m from Florida. :P

My S just received an email yesterday saying that Drexel had received an extraordinary number of highly qualified candidates for the Music Industry major. The email was encouraging applicants to select a second choice if they had not already done so. When doing initial research I remember their web site saying they typically receive about 700 applicants for 50-60 spots. I think that’s one of the main reasons they implemented the Early Decision option for Westphal this year. (Music Industry and Architecture are the two most sought after programs, very competitive, in that college.) When we were visiting I had asked Westphal admissions staff where the “bar” was for ED acceptance as a MI major. She said probably around a 3.2 GPA and a something like a 1200 SAT (CR & Math, not including writing score). That’s about a 27 ACT score for comparison. It sounds like the bar might be getting a bit higher. My S applied RD and has above those qualifications plus lots of experience and extra curriculars, plus a pretty terrific portfolio. They emphasized the importance of the portfoilo when we visited. Although the applications says it’s not required I do think they really want to see some portfolio of work, whether it’s creative or managerial, etc. It will be interesting to see what happens. My S has already been accepted by three other Music Business/Music Industry Programs and will not add a second choice to his application.

It sounds like they are literally swamped with great applicants, so it will take some time for them to make final decisions. Congrats to those who are already accepted! And, good luck to those who haven’t heard yet!
