Hello, I am applying to colleges this year and I have an interest in pursuing a career in music. I have been playing electric guitar for six years and have some understanding of music theory. Would it be wise with my level of experience to pursue such a demanding degree?? Please note that I only play electric guitar and am not familiar with any other instruments. My overall high school GPA is 3.4 and I am still looking at colleges to apply to(I am only looking at colleges on the west coast, primarily California). Can anyone help me out and potentially point me to some interesting colleges. Thanks!

You have the perfect GPA range for Whittier College. My daughter will be applying next year and it’s one of her favorite schools we’ve visted so far. The campus is beautiful and backs up the the San Gabriel mountains, it has a funky little town with coffee shops, movie theatre. It’s only about 30 min. to the ocean and downtown LA. The good news for you is that they offer a music scholarship worth 12K yearly. You should definitely submit the music supplement and apply for it.

Sonoma State U. is another one that may fit the bill if you are looking at northern CA.

I don’t know if these schools have music theory, but also look at Lewis & Clark, U of Puget Sound, Pitzer, Whitman (GPA range is slightly higher, so use collegedata.com to determine how reachy.

Try the music major forum available on the main page.

The University of Oregon has a well-known school of music and dance, and your GPA tells me you’re a match. It’s location (Eugene, OR) is rated by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the top ten college music scenes. I also have many music major friends at CSU Long Beach and UC Irvine who are doing quite well.

Belmont University in Nashville has a music education major and is an excellent private university.
