Music major veterans, how did you notify teachers that you wouldn't be joining their studio?

You've had a sample lesson, auditioned, and exchanged admission emails, but you can only choose one offer. Do you send an email briefly explaining your choice and end by expressing a hope that you'll have a chance to work with them in the future, or do you just notify the admissions that you won't be attending? Thoughts?

The former. It’s a small world, music.

Thanks!

@dec51995- Yes, if there has been a studio assignment or discussions with a teacher, by all means do exactly as you discussed. Teachers move around, there are summer programs…a whole host of things could bring the student and that prof back into contact so always exit on a nice note (Sorry, I couldn’t resist that :">).

Once you have notified the professor, do you notify Admissions as well? And do you have to formally decline the award packages or does a phone call or email to Financial Aid suffice?

Yes, you should notify Admissions. Most schools indicate the process by which to accept or decline the offer. Check your notification materials.

Thanks @clarimom
