Music minor/ non music major

Hello,
I am a freshman currently studying engineering at the University of Rochester looking forward to transfer. My prospective major will probably be computer science or other physics related engineering. Interested in voice, I also would want to get a minor degree in voice performance(or even a major if the workload is manageable). I hope to transfer to a higher ranked school (top twenties) but at the same time have access to the music school. Does anyone have suggesting schools that is both strong in engineering and music or has exchange programs with nearby music institutions? I am planning on going to music grad schools as well, is it possible for non-music majors or music minors? Thanks!!!

Music performance minor is a rare bird. Almost all music school faculty offer private lessons outside of the U. Why not just take advantage of that? Prices vary from teacher to teacher and school to school.

Unless you really hate the U of R, you’re in a good place to do what you’re talking about. You could talk to the folks at Eastman about double majoring, but it’s too late to do that for the 14-15 school year. If you take lessons at Eastman as a “minor” or just because you are interested, you’ll be studying with a graduate student and that’s not the optimum plan either. Since you’re there, why not make an appointment over at Eastman and go talk to them? Since you’re at the U of R, they just might be able to make some suitable arrangements so that you won’t have to lose more time.
It used to be possible to get into a good VP grad school (note the word, “good”) without an undergrad degree in music, it’s not easy any more. You have to perform at a very high level while knowing what repertoire will be needed and there are music theory and music history sequences that are needed as well. There are some places where you can go slower and make up the deficiencies, but you’re going to be behind in those areas and vocally. I’d go the route that I suggested first, and if you need any other ideas, please PM me.
