Music-obsessed?

Today in class we were talking about colleges, and I mentioned that I was applying to Oberlin, and everyone freaked out! Everyone who had heard of it insisted that it was entirely musically based.

And I quote: "Everyone at Oberlin plays an instrument or sings. If you're not a world class triangle-player or something, you will have no social life."

Well, that's nice. I mean, I knew that it was a big part (the Conservatory, duh) but I didn't think I would be a social pariah. Are they exaggerating or do I need to bust out my xylophone from 6th grade and start practicing??

Not true. The Conservatory accounts for less than 25% of the students at Oberlin. If you want to get in there, you have a lot of practicing to catch up on.

Among the non-Conservatory students, you will find the usual mix of a few who are fairly serious about voice or an instrument, some who have 6th grade xylophones gathering dust in their closet, and some who have never played anything but the radio.
