What schools have outstanding double degrees in music performance and music education? I know Oberlin and NYU Steinhardt do, but what else?
Ithaca - it’s a 4-1/2 year program. Very popular, but many students end up doing one or the other because it is difficult.
Eastman.Hartt. Also, not outstanding for performance but a strong music ed and performance would be SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of music. Crane just hired a new violin prof who has good buzz.
FYI a double degree usually refers to programs that include a degree outside the school of music, so two music-related majors within the school of music would generally be referred to as a double major. Since there tends to be some confusion about double major vs. double degree, I thought it was worth clarifying that.
I immediately thought of Ithaca (4.5 years) and Eastman (also 4.5 years but free tuition for that last semester of student teaching for those who qualify - see Eastman FORTE program). At Ithaca, the prof we talked to treats all studio members like performance majors regardless of their major, so unless they really want to have that performance credential, most of the studio ends up doing just MusicEd vs. the double major.
I think Michigan has a few combo degrees that include both Music Ed and performance e.g. Performance with Teacher Certification or Music Ed with a Performer’s Certificate or something like that. Worth checking. Miami/Frost might allow Music Ed majors to get a performance certificate, as well (I think they told us they were going to start offering that this year or next).
classicalsaxmom, my daughter is a senior at Ithaca, and in her violin studio at least, there was a pretty even spilt between those who dropped the double major in favor of performance vs music ed… In fact, I think there might have been more who went for performance and dropped the ed. It really is very tough, and as you say, some of the studio teachers aren’t very accommodating when it comes to the conflicts that do come up with the music ed. requirements for those double major kids.
Singitloud, please be aware that Oberlin Conservatory does not have Degree in Music Education.
Oh… the materials I got said that students could get a BM and MMT in 5 years.
See here for info about Oberlin’s program in Music Education:

That is for graduate students and is a master degree (called Master of Music Teaching). Oberlin Conservatory does not offer undergraduate Music Education degree.
