I've seen some schools include a statement saying that if you're interested in art/music/drama/et etera to include a portfolio of your work.

I'm really into music. I play tuba and baritone. For the schools that have stated this I will most likely include one of these with the recordings of a solo, a few scales, etc., but what about the schools that don't state this? Would it be a good idea to include one, or better yet, just to call and ask about it?

Also, I'm not exceptionally talented. If I'm not up to par to their expectations would it hurt my chances that I've submitted a recording?

I would say to include on your application under EC/special interest that you play those instruments and have your music teachers fill out one of the special interest recs. You can include a sticky that says something like, "If you'd like a recording, please let me know and I will send one ASAP." My son is in a similar situation with music and drama. His teachers will likely mention the work he has done in these areas in their recs. He may even ask his principal to mention it in his because it's a tiny bit uncommon - what he does. If he were super-duper in piano, (he's not, just intermediate) we would send a dvd.

Honestly, I think the schools expect a certain level of dedication from their applicants and assume you're as good as you say you are. As a matter of fact, my husband asked about this at the interview and he said that those things (playing level) would just be used for placement after he was enrolled, (theoretically, of course).

Thanks so much. That cleared up a lot.

I'll be sure to stick to all of that. It's great information.
