Music practice rooms ?

When I visited in summer I saw good practice rooms @ Blair but I don't remember if the Commons or dorms have any practice rooms. When I visited Rice they had real good ones in the dorms. Can @Faline2 or @StringPop comment please?

Looks like several of the Commons dorms have practice rooms:

The dorms do have them, but it’s basically one per house as far as I recall. They’re available to all Vandy students (not just Blair) and are in high demand (a lot of kids make music at Vanderbilt). My daughter has never used one, or tried to – Blair has a ton of practice rooms available 24 hours a day/7 days a week, and she practically lives there.

There is a practice room or two in each of the Commons houses. They are in most upperclassmen dorms as well.

My son uses the practice rooms in his house in the Commons routinely. He has never complained about them being unavailable. There are two in his house and at least one of them has a piano.

There are plenty of opportunities for students to continue to “make music” or study music while at Vanderbilt. Son is an engineering student. Last semester he took a music literature class and this semester he is taking the 2nd semester of music theory for non-majors. He is also in a small jazz combo class with 5 other students led by the Director of the Nashville Jazz Workshop. The class meets once a week for an hour and they will perform a couple of times this semester.

He’s actively involved in the Spirit of Gold Band. He marched during football season and joins the pep band for both Women’s and Men’s basketball.

One of the reasons he selected VU was because he could study engineering but continue to pursue his love of music.

There are practice rooms in most of the Commons houses (there were 2 in my house), as well as practice rooms in Towers and Branscomb. I don’t think there are practice rooms on Highland, because it’s so close to Blair, but there will be practice rooms in Warren and Moore next year.

Okay, let me dispel some of the rumors about music practice rooms.

1) There is very low demand for them. You can go in there anytime you want. In fact, last semester I used them extensively for studying, not music, and only once did someone ever come down to kick me out.

2) There are at least two in every dorm. One will have a piano that is probably in need of tuning. My twin brother (who is also a first year) complains that the f key doesn’t work… The other room will have a chair and portable lectern for music sheets.

3) Which house you are in detriments the size of the room. In east house they are tiny. You can barely fit a table in there… but they are big enough for you to sit down, put your music on the lectern and practice.

4) Depending on which house you are in the rooms may not look the nicest. Ya’ll tour hank, which is by far the nicest dorm… East’s rooms are a touch weathered… and are considered, by us, to be a touch creepy.

All in all they get the job done. They aren’t fancy or inspiring, but your music will make up the difference :)
