I'm a flute player and so far I'm applying to Shenandoah Conservatory, VCU, WVU, and GMU. Does anyone know good music programs in VA?

Is your focus performance, music ed, general music, a music academic discipline, or a non music undergrad degree? Are you a Virginia state resident? Answers may well sway responses.

How 'bout JMU? They seem to be throwing some money at the music school and have a new performing arts center under construction.

From what I understand the music school at JMU has a very good reputation. I teach in the theatre and dance school at JMU, and have the opportunity to work with SOM students as well. I also attend SOM performances quite often. I have been impressed on both counts. Faculty often perform in a concert series at the Kennedy center, and sometimes students will join them on the program. JMU is building a new 90 million dollar performing arts center that will be shared by the SOM and the school of theatre and dance. It will open in fall of 2010. If you have other questions I will do my best to answer them. The mom of a current JMU music student also often posts on this forum.

I think that would be me - my D is a music major at JMU and the program is a very good one - the best overall in Virginia according to my research. I can't claim to know anything about the flute, however. My D knows a couple of kids who are flute majors whom she says are happy with the program. JMU definitely bears checking out.
