Music Scholarships

Does any one know colleges that give scholarships to musicians, particularly euphonium or trombone players?

Are you going to be a music major or just planning to be in the band?
Rice gives some merit money to students accepted into the Shepherd School.

I'd suggest researching such a specific category on a scholarship site such as FastWeb.

Re: Fastweb for music specific scholarships... you may find a few (very few), but most are competition based, or limited to specific small geographic regions (county, high school).

The answer to the question of a music specific scholarship for a non-music major will vary widely from each institution. Some will offer a small scholarship if you are willing to commit to playing in an ensemble(s), others will limit scholarships to music minors or majors. There is no one answer. Ask the music department or visit the music/scholarship webpages for the schools that interest you.

For music majors, most performance based scholarships are a function of the audition outcome, and can range from a pittance to full tuition depending on instrument and makeup of the audition pool.

Big-time football programs give marching band scholarships, and I've heard that the hardest instrument to recruit is tuba (a couple years ago, someone on CC had gotten a tuba scholarship to Southern Cal). If you play the euphonium, perhaps you can play tuba as well?

Thanks, this is helpful.

Tuba would not be a hard switch from euphonium; many of my friends have done it. I don't plan to major in music, but I enjoy being in band a lot.

The University of Rochester has music scholarships for non-majors.

Ajjared, there is a section of this forum that discusses certain majors, and it has an excellent forum on music majors. Whether you plan to major in music or not, you will find it very helpful with regard to info about various music programs, scholarships, audition procedures, etc. Suggest you click into that forum and take a look. Good luck.
