Music school/Univ that meet this criteria?

Thank you Violadad! I will check those out. Performance (vocal) and songwriting are her strenght as well as creative writing . She has recorded a CD but knows nothing about the marketing part. She pretty much finished her 2 years core curriculum at Pace and was hoping to " find a band" and perform. Finding a band outside of a school is quite difficult especially because she does’nt go to bars…etc. I was hoping she would continue her english major as her chances to make a living in songwriting is pretty slim (not that english is much better either!!) , but she is so miserable (at 20) that my advice to her was to find the right school somewhere anywhere. and may be with her writing skills and music love she could actually do something she enjoys. Thank you for your help, Joselle

Thank you Violadad… I’ll pass on the information. Hopefully she will find her niche. Again thanks, Joselle

University of Maryland-College Park

DDs goal is to be a junior high or high school band director but her 2nd interest is German because she has had 5 years of high school German. She thinks that if she is capable of teaching German instead of just band she has another chance to get her foot in the door at a jr high or high school. She would also like to study abroad for a semester or a year, and possibly play in a concert group in Germany.

How about Notre Dame or Oklahoma State? Notre Dame’s music major is tougher to get into, but an academic major with music courses might be the way to go. I’m not sure what you are looking for, because you mention music education and German along with music- could you clarify for us, please?
Syracuse would be a good one to consider if the cold of upstate NY isn’t a problem (but the snows of the plains region can be pretty amazing too!).

Midwest: Ohio University, Athens, OH, State School, 70 miles SE of Columbus and not to be confused with Ohio State University. Home of the Marching 110, BUT there are no flutes in the band BUT as an ed major you’ll have to learn other instruments so the 110 will be the way to do that. You’ll never have more fun in a band, no corps style here, only high energy dancing and marching–check them out on Youtube. The football games get about 20,000 to attend and the band plays a big part in the Saturday afternoon excitement.

Very good flute choir, music education and a tough German department with an Austrian travel abroad campus, Leipzig, I believe. My son is a performance major but most in the School of Music are ed majors. Opportunity for either the orchestra or wind ensemble and that flute choir.

Idyllic campus setting in Appalachia so if the outdoors are of interest, lots of hiking and rock climbing and mountain (big hills actually) biking are popular. Weather is usually nice through November and spring comes in early in March.

Not a highly selective school so they give really good merit aid to high scorers on SAT/ACT with what’s known as a Gateway Scholarship. Check it out [Ohio University](Ohio University)

Joselle – I don’t know anything quite like Tisch per se in terms of flavor, but I am familiar with (and my son loves) the University of Michigan’s Performing Arts Technology program which has flexible streams in BFA (as opposed to BM or BS) that suit more of a combination of technical production together with some performance and some composition (mostly electronic) and draws in other fine arts disciplines as well. Musically, the program seems to appreciate a wide variety of genres (based on its acceptance of my s., who submitted classical, jazz, contemporary alternative, and rockomedy material : ) It has fewer spots avail than Tisch and likely wouldn’t accept a ton of outside credits either since it is so very loaded with prerequisites from across multiple disciplines. She’d need to be very interested in the technical production aspect and be very comfortable ultimately with music technology to find a fit in that program. There is also a new interarts program (don’t know much about it, but believe SOM is a participant) if again she is looking to mix music and other media.
We are also (less) familiar with Indiana University Bloomington’s Jacob’s School of Music Recording Arts program, where many of the candidates enjoy writing and performing contemporary music while learning to produce and record same. More emphasis there on sound reinforcement/live capture. Again, good candidates are comfortable with gear, math and science as well. Hope that helps.
Cheers,
K
PS I second VDad though on the credit issue…max to grad from U of M regular is 60 outside. But I doubt it would be possible to meet the U of M PAT program’s requirements using that many.

How about Indiana University?

Thank you all for your quick and kind responses. I will investigate with her all the possibilities. At least now she knows there are other options. J.

how about flute and sailing? It’s for a friend who is a B student, extremely talented musically, but will be a nationally ranked sailor. Any matches for her??

mom22 - I hereby grant you the award for the most unique question ever posted on these boards! :D

WOW - that’s quite a compliment!! It is truly legitimate though. Anyone have any suggestions?

I guess it rules out the midwest. :D

unless there’s sailing on Lake Michigan

I may be tactless and tacky, but my tacking skills are non existent. I’m going to admit I’m out of my depth here. Without knowing what she intends from a music standpoint, there are many more:

[Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association - Member Schools](http://www.mcsasail.org/index.php?pagename=MemberSchools)

[CollegeSailing.org - Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association of North America (ICSA)](http://www.collegesailing.org/teams.asp)

I’m sure if you came back with some options, you’ll get plenty of musical feedback.

Yes - there is sailing on Lake Michigan! Chicago to Mackinac Island race is an annual biggie. I can’t comment re “national ranked sailing” criteria, but I was a recreational sailor all the years I lived in Chicago. Northwestern rents boats off their beach and offers lessons. Lots of races every weekend.

Northwestern would be a stretch for a B student. DePaul or Roosevelt? She’d have to check flute teacher - my knowledge does not stretch to an endorsement. Roosevelt is in view of Lake Michigan sailing, DePaul Lincoln Park campus a walkable distance!

Just throwing out a few I found.

St. Mary’s - Maryland - Has sailing, and music dept. Sailing for both men and women, and seem to take it seriously! No idea how good their music dept. is, but they seem sincere. :)

Denison College in Ohio - Okay, I know something about this one, since my D applied here. Small music department, but lovely small school. And they have sailing - who knew? (As a club sport. Does that matter?) Miami U (where my D goes) also has sailing as a club sport. So do many schools around the Great Lakes.

University of Maryland College Park apparently has a team, and they have beautiful new music facilities.

Looking through some of the links that violadad posted, it looks like it will come down to what matters most to the student - music or sailing, and how good is he academically. I am not seeing a lot of “pure” conservatories with sailing. The Ivy’s all seem to offer sailing. Music programs there are as good as many LACs.

I thought maybe Johns Hopkins (Peabody) might have a program, given their location, but I don’t see it listed.

Penn State has a sailing program, and I think there may be some here with knowledge about their music programs.

Boston U has sailing. Ask thumper about the music. McGill has sailing, and a music following on this board.

University of Georgia has a great music school and a sailing program. Also Vanderbilt. University of Michigan. Northwestern.

Looks like there are plenty of options!

How about Claire Trevor School of the Arts at University of California, Irvine. Sailing is big there, and a B average might not discount her, provided she is a talented flute player.

I assume that you are looking for sailing at the Intercollegiate level, which restricts you to about 20 schools total right there. Of those, the ones with good music programs are:

McGill U
Stanford U
Tufts U (if considered in combination with New England Conservatory)

Those are going to be a stretch for a B student unless the sailing turns out to be a hook rather than a gaff(e).

The following have sailing at the club level and a very good music department. Obviously some would require a fair amount of travel to reach a major body of water.

Arizona State U
Baylor U
Boston U
California State U (Long Beach)
Florida State U
Indiana U
Miami U Ohio
Michigan State U
Northwestern U
Ohio State U
Rice U
U Delaware
U Georgia
U Illinois Urbana Champaign
U Iowa
U Maryland
U Miami (FL)
U Michigan
U Minnesota (Twin Cities)
U North Texas
U Rochester (if considered in combination with Eastman)
U Texas (Austin)
U Washington
Vanderbilt U

Another word on UCI–Its intercollegiate co-ed sailing teams routinely place in the top 3. They are in NCAA division I athletics. You can’t beat the weather, and it’s a joy to sail in Newport Beach.

UC Santa Barbara is a good choice also. USC usually places 1st or 2nd–but the B average might keep her out.

Chapman University also has intercollegiate sailing, and the music department is strong also. Good luck!
