Hello! I am planning on auditioning for the music theatre program at the university of hartford, and due to family finances, I have never taken a dance class (I know basic ballet, tap, and movement). I have a huge willingness to learn, but realistically, would it even be worth auditioning even though I have not been professionally trained? I would really appreciate the advice. Thank you so much!
Are you planning on auditioning at other schools besides Hartford? I cannot speak to that program specifically, but there are very well regarded programs which either do not have a dance component in their audition process (Carengie Mellon being the biggest elegant in that room) or may not not give much weight to the dance component when deciding who to accept (Wright State is just one example). There are stories aplenty on this forum of students who got accepted to fine programs with little dance experience.
Thanks for replying! I plan on auditioning for many other schools, but was curious if anyone knew anything about what I should do if I have little dance experience because Hartford seems fantastic.
Hi! I hope this post is not too late–I assume you were a junior when you posted this, and are auditioning in the winter of 2017-2018? I would urge you to not let your lack of dance experience determine where you audition. Many of the programs will tell you that the dance audition will not make or break your acceptance. My son had NO dance experience but was accepted everwhere he applied, including Hartt. That being said, he did find it to be the most difficult dance auditionof all the schools. I think you should go ahead and apply and audition at the Hartt School (Univ. of Hartford). You may want to take a class dedicated to MT college auditions–The Broadway Dance Collective travels around the country and my son found the one class very helpful. I would also urge you to apply to other schools as well–my son is now a freshman at Pace in their MT program, and loves it. Best of luck to you!
