Hello,
I am currently attending Montgomery College (community college) as a music major (you can't become very specific here) but I am interested in Music Therapy. The closest school that offers it is Howard university in DC. I was wondering how good is the program, and if anyone has anything they can say about it? I was also looking at Shenandoah and Temple University but they are farther away (But I think those programs might be better) Please help...

I apologize that I can’t be more specific. Here is a link that may help you:

Yea I already read about the program, and got the basic information of the program. I just wanted to know if anyone knows if its a good program to go to? I was only considering this program based on the fact that its local. If someone can tell me that its worth attending maybe I’ll feel a little better about it.

Have you checked out Nazareth College in Rochester, NY (farther still!)? They have a very well-respected program with their own lab/practicum facilities right on campus. Definitely worth a look, especially since I know that they have 100% job placement rates…

Have you seen this list of schools?

Nazareth is a good school. Temple is also a very well known program! Honestly I have not heard about the mt program in dc. I would make sure that Howard has a certified program. Shenandoah is also a good school. I believe they may have an online mt program as well. Temple’s program is mostly online as well. You go to the school for intensive classes 3-10 days, two times a semester. Best of luck!

pwrsurg35: I’m looking at area schools too If I find any new info I’ll be sure to post them.
Noey543: Is there a website that specifies Temple’s online classes? I’ve seen their website but didn’t realize they had an online option. Thanks so much.

I studied music therapy out of state but due to a hand injury, finances and other events I wasn’t able finish. Luckily, I had enough credits to receive a general music degree from the college, but since I spent most of my time in the music therapy department, its been difficult to find work/internships in the music industry besides private teaching and realizing that music therapy is what I’m really passionate about I’ve been looking at schools nearby. In the big picture, no matter where you go you’ll get the same degree that will make you a candidate for the MT-BC credential. However, speaking from experience, each school has a different structure when it comes to various coursework and clinical/practicums and teaching and learning styles. It’s more important to find a school that works for you and what your goals are. Right now think if you were a music therapist right now where would you want to work, in a hospital? nursing home? School? Private practice?what population would you like to work with, children adults, special needs, autism, alzeihmers etc etc? Are you a classically trained, more of a jazz head or contemporary musician? What are your strengths and weaknesses? As a musician? as a human being? as a performer? All music therapy programs are required to give a well rounded education, working in various places, however maybe there’s a professor at one school that’s very resourceful/knowledgable in a specific area that interests you? Start asking your self questions like these and then some, maybe volunteer or shadow a music therapist for a day. Do whatever you need to do to make the most informed decision. Hope this helps!
