So, I have always been interested in classical and musical theater singing, like many people. I know they are conflicting techniques but I would like to be able to study both. It could be classical voice training in lessons and then participating in musical productions, but I'd like to have the option. The only school I know of where I can do this is Muhlenberg. Most schools I have looked at pretty much make you choose one degree or the other. At this point I am strictly auditioning with classical pieces but I don't want to mess up the chance down the road if I decide to do just musical theater. Any advice?

From what you just described, I would say that Oklahoma City University is the place for you. You will find that singing music theater singing and classical singing is NOT conflicting technique at all.

At OCU, all majors, both music theater and vocal performance, must perform a classical junior recital. All majors, both MT and VP, must audition for ALL productions (musicals and opera). It’s not uncommon to see a VP take the lead in one of the musicals, nor is it uncommon to see MTs in major roles in operas!

If you’d like to know more about OCU and its program, feel free to PM me. I’d be glad to answer any and all questions you have about the program (I’m about to graduate in May). :)

I concur with the statements above, you should look into OCU. My S graduated from there a couple of years ago and he was cast in both musicals and operas.
