Musical Theater and English/Math

I'm looking for some great colleges with a strong English or Math department but an even stronger musical theater department. I know that if i were to go to Tisch I would not be able to major in anything else but what are some schools that will let me Major and minor or double major in two things and is on the east coast. Also would these schools let me be able to audition in and then have access to other majors?

The University of Michigan, while not exactly on the east coast, will allow you to dual major in many disciplines. Michigan has strong English and Math departments as well as one of the top musical theater programs in the country.

If you get a BFA degree in MT nearly anywhere, you would be unlikely to be to get a dual degree in under five years. For instance, check out the Freshman Year curriculum in the MT department at Carnegie Mellon - one of the top MT programs in the country:

Fall: Acting I, Speech I, Voice/Alexander I, Movement I, Ballet I, Music Skills I, Production Symposium I, Conservatory Hour, Voice Lab, Interpretation and Argument, Computing at Carnegie Mellon.

Spring: Acting I, Speech I, Voice/Alexander I, Movement I, Ballet I, Music Skills II, Production Symposium I, Conservatory Hour, Foundations of Drama I, Voice Lab, Critical Histories of the Arts.

The other three years are similar - without the Computing course - except that there’s an opportunity for one non-Drama elective course during the spring of the junior year.

At Tisch, the theater studies requirements function like a de facto English department, just that you are analyzing literature through the lens of theater. You will do plenty of reading, writing and critical analysis of literary elements at Tisch just through the academic requirements of the major, plus whatever additional credits taken, as required, through Arts and Sciences. Yes, difficult but not impossible to double major, but that doesn’t mean you don’t spend time in other disciplines.

MusicalMaya, you might consider looking into the BHA (Bachelor of Humanities and Arts) or BSA (Bachelor of Science and Arts) programs at Carnegie Mellon. Those programs allow students to focus their degree in both areas.
