DS17 is a junior who is looking at studying CS at a CTCL. He has been very active in his HS musical theater program and would love to continue being involved in college, either formal study or co-curricular. I can’t find any mention of musical theater opportunities at any of the midwestern LACs we are studying-Wooster, Knox, Allegheny or similar. Can anyone help?
My D is at Lawrence University in Wisconsin. We attended an excellent student musical theater production there when we were visiting one weekend. I don’t know how often they put on a musical but they do have the conservatory to draw talent from for those kinds of productions. You might want to contact the theater department directly at schools you are considering to ask if there are any musical theater productions. Also, you may want to post your question in the musical theater majors subforum under College Majors as there are likely posters there who are familiar with MT programs at various colleges.
Great ideas. Thanks!
Other places to look, maybe St. Olaf because of its well known vocal music and Oberlin since it also has a music conservatory. Good luck!
Kalamazoo College and Hope College are CTCL schools in Michigan with very active theatre programs that do musicals and encourage participation from non-major students. Kalamazoo is great college town (my d attends Western Michigan U in MT, which is literally right next door to Kalamazoo College). Hope College sponsors professional summer stock.
My D had Denison as one of her non-audition safety programs - she toured and met with the theater dept there, and really liked what was going on in the department
@fwtxmom - since your nom de plume implies that you are from the great state of Texas, you may want to look at Southwestern in Georgetown, a CTCL school with a very solid theatre department that does musicals (they are currently doing A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum).
We have a friend whose D went to Ohio Wesleyan for theater and really loved it. And we have many friends who have gone to Centre College and participated in theater. Centre has some phenomenal voice faculty in addition to a strong theater department. Centre is a phenomenal school and is typically highly ranked nationally. I do not know how many musicals each of the schools does, but I do know both do some musicals.
@Emsdad DS is anxious to experience other great states for college. He is the odd man out politically at his small private school and desperately wants to find more openminded “kids like him.” I went to UT which would be a comfortable fit but I’m not so sure about Georgetown.
A CTCL school that has a solid theatre program and allows minors is Ursinus College in Pennsylvania
