Both the FSU programs are extremely selective. The FSU Film School, for example, takes 30 undergrads and 30 grad students out of 2000 applications. Good luck. ;)

edmondsg -- If Dominic Missimi is teaching at Northwestern, I am sure they have a wonderful program. I knew him many years ago in Detroit, and he was a terrific director and teacher.

A young lady who graduated from my D's high school was in the Northwestern AMTP production discussed on the podcast. She seems to have had a wonderful experience so far. I think she is very involved in one of the a cappella groups too.

A very talented kid MT from my S's high school who graduated a couple of years ago went to CCM. I was kind of surprised that he was going to this place, of which I admit I had never heard. (From my theater-mad youth, CMU and Northwestern, North Carolina School of the Arts, and Julliard were among the bigger names I recalled.) Having read this and allied threads, I now realize what a coup that was!

I would also say that Oberlin College is among one of the "top" MT schools...it was ranked above the top 20 (if i remeber correctly) last year for the best musical theatre/liberal arts schools.

Oberlin is a wonderful school. It does not offer musical theater, however. I don't know what ranking you are discussing but I have never seen a ranking for MT schools. If there ever was one, Oberlin would NOT be on it. Oberlin may have decent theater but isn't one of the top theater programs either. It is an excellent school, and has a wonderful music conservatory. I would not recommend it for MT.

What "best musical theatre/liberal arts schools" list are you referring to, may I ask? Just curious, thanks.

Onstage, that's good to hear about Dominic's past life... I don't know much about him except his ventures at NU and with the Marriott Lincolnshire Theatre. David Bell and Amanda Dehnert are also at NU now; my son is very impressed with them so far (he's a soph).

soozievt, i was pleasantly surprised to read the list of require voice classes at NYU in addition to private voice -- they're almost identical to the ones at NU.

cartera45, which acappella group is your daughter's high school friend in, do you know? purple haze, undertones, thunk, freshman 15? my son is asst music director for the undertones. they're hosting the ICCA semi-finals at NU this spring.

Utepsong,
Is there some purpose to your list in post # 49? Just wondering…

I find it to be a very curious post myself. It is on a thread that has not been posted on in almost two years. The thread is about ranking of MT college programs, for which there are no rankings.

The posted list is not ranked anyway.

What the list appears to be is almost a copy of the alphabetical listing of MT programs (mostly the BFA or BM ones) at the top of the MT Forum, though left some off such as NYU/Tisch, Montclair, Otterbein, etc.

… and Northwestern… (although not a BFA). Very odd list indeed!

Right, as I wrote, he stuck to copying most of the BFAs and BMs atop this forum, eliminating most BAs (except Wagner), thus knocking out programs like Northwestern and UCLA and others.

Also, in terms of selectivity, as well as name recognition, it is much harder to get into NYU/Tisch, Northwestern, and UCLA, than, let’s say, Millikin (and some others listed), as well as they are far more well known.

A ranking by alphabetical order. Interesting. ;)

It is simply copied from the sub forum list at the top, but omitting some programs. For instance, it is not coincidental that U Miami is listed as “University of Miami - Florida”. Roger Dooley listed it that way when he set up the sub forums but anyone in MT would simply say University of Miami without qualifying that it is the university in Florida, because they know that Miami University in Ohio doesn’t have a MT program. Also copied exactly are “University of Hartford - Hartt” and “California State University, Fullerton”. Notice the copy of “Pennsylvania State University” which anyone on the MT forum refers to as Penn State but that is not how it is listed by Roger for the sub forum titles. No coincidence. As well, the sub forums are in alphabetical order.

Does any of this matter? Of course not. But we have newbies visiting this site every day and so this needs to be pointed out so that the post is in context.

I agree – unsuspecting newbies will go straight to a “rankings” thread if they see it, and not only is the above list not ranked, it’s based on no fact or research whatsoever, so there must be some ulterior motive. It’s certainly misleading to young MT hopefuls just starting their college search.

Yes, note the winking smiley. I’m aware that it’s not a true ranking and that the list was simply copied. I think that anyone with even a modicum of common sense would realize that it isn’t an actual ranked list. The chances that ANY ranked list, for ANYthing, would just happen to fall into alphabetical order are zero. That was my point. :)

utepsong is supposedly the musical theatre liaison at Illinois Wesleyan. Perhaps he/she should be asked, via a mod, as to the reason for the post.

I noticed the winking smiley and was supporting your post further, because there are unsuspecting newbies reading this thread.

I think the point has been made. In any case, hopefully anyone reading a message board doesn’t take everything posted as substantiated factual information!

I believe utepsong is a student at Illinois Wesleyan. Perhaps he/she may wish to follow up on their post here.

alwaysamom, i knew your comment was tongue-in-cheek! i was just adding my two cents, which happened to come out more seriously than yours. ;)
